The question on hand is whether the air quotes go over the words - good, standing, good standing or cleared. Or if there are any air quotes at all.

I doubt that QB is going to be ready - either physically or mentally - to play the whole game. I imagine we'll see him a bit but we'll see both QB's. We can still win the game if we play well.

I believe Griggs' last action was in the Independence Bowl. He hasn't played or practiced since then. Neither quarterback is special. From what I read, it's the OL that's struggling. The game is winnable, but we'll have to play very well. They're upset and now they get two damn weeks to prepare.

By cleared, I meant that they investigated whatever he was accused of doing, and found out he didn't do it.
And given the track record of teams these days being in line with the credibility of the Kremlin and their nerve gas denials, how exactly do we determine this?

I guess the thing to do is to immediately dismiss from school anybody accused of anything. Why bother with an investigation if nobody buys any result other than guilty?
Thanks for pointing this out for me. Sometimes I get all caught up in this fairness thingie.

Or, you know, be skeptical; the point of my post.
But if we want to deal in gross overreactions...

That's not the way the American legal system works, and we should not expect it to work that way in systems like this. There are too many cases where accusation of wrongdoing - however trivial - means that you must resign. I think we have to be satisfied that USM suspended the player pending some process, but it's too much to expect that a player be proven innocent.

If they are as bad as their bulletin board postings make them out to be, we should have a good shot at beating them. Their board is even more negative than our board was last year!

Opening odds are Rice +13. Ouch.
The line might move in Rice's direction.

Reviewing the boxscore from last year's match up:
- Rice lost 43-34@HRS (Rice went to 1-9, S. Miss to 6-4).
- Southern Miss punted 0 times.
- No turnovers for either team.
- Their recently reinstated QB had a good game. 331 yards, 3 TD's.
- Their RB had a huge game, he's in NFL now.
- A cornerback lead them in (solo) tackles, he's in NFL now.
- One of their WR's had a huge game (159, 2 td's), he's gone too.
- Nahshon Ellerbe had a great game for the Owls, 22 carries 154 yards, 4TD's

Any predictions? I still think we lose a close game. We need to steal a road victory somewhere. I hope this is it. At this point, I consider any road win an upset.

Yes, I'm biased, but my eye test would put us somewhere in the 100 - 110 range.
I think we get off this list for good this weekend with a close road win vs. USM.

RE: Southern Miss Pre-Game Thread
I'm not really sure what to think about this game.
USM has a lot more talent than us, but I think there's some internal turmoil with the QB situation and then also the RB oddly deciding to transfer midseason.
I also think USM's coaching staff is far worse than ours. Jay Hopson (their HC) came from Alcorn St, where he was less successful than our OC Jerry Mack was at NCCU.

RE: Southern Miss Pre-Game Thread
I have absolutely no feel for how this game is going to unfold. But in trying to figure out if Rice has a shot at a victory I discovered that the Conference USA website has a pretty good interactive statistics section that is easy to use and fairly comprehensive. ( http://conferenceusa.com/stats.aspx?path...year=2018&)
The most troubling comparison to me is that Southern Mississippi is ranked 3rd in passing offense in CUSA while Rice has the 13th ranked passing defense. In most other statistical categories Southern Miss is ranked in the middle of the pack. If Rice can run consistently on the Southern Miss defense and control the clock, they have a chance to upset by holding on for dear life at the end of the game. I think there has to be a turnover or two go in the Owls way to seal the deal.
Rice 31-28 is my optimistic pick, Southern Miss 34 - 27 is my gut reaction....

They also played Jackson State where they put up 55 points and padded their stats. Against ULM, they only scored 20, although they did have 400 yards of offense.
Point being, I am not sure how real their #3 ranking is. Our secondary is pretty bad though, so it may not matter that much.
