Jeter also had a fire sale after he became owner and shed all of the Marlins' talent.

RE: FAU and FIU: will they ever gain a following?
If FAU and FIU can hang on to their coaches, both will make some noise in the coming years. I have no idea if or when either could see a serious increase in their fan bases. Having stated that, most G5 programs need to improve their attendance numbers, so they are not alone.

FAU and FIU: will they ever gain a following?
(08-01-2018 10:05 AM)whittx Wrote: If either of the two had a shot at gaining a real following, it would probably be FAU since Boca Raton is far enough away from Miami to be its own universe, especially if 95 and the Turnpike are slammed and the area is much more demographically friendly for football. . Palm Beach County is its own universe that just happens to be 30 miles as the crow flies from Hard Rock Stadium. This is TCU-SMU or Texas-Texas State distance. FIU has the issues of proximity to UM, a larger commuter population, and a much different demographic composition (66% Hispanic) that does not lend itself to being college football going folks. I get why they added football and went FBS (Keeping up with the Jones at FAU and USF that added football around the same time), but it is going to be a much tougher road to build something there than at FAU.

FAU and FIU: will they ever gain a following?

88 degrees year round and too many things to do and oh yeah it’s the beach. Add to that a tough economic climate where people are selective about their entertainment dollar and only pull for winners. FAU and FIU will have to continue to win and will have to play home games against teams that matter. Nobody is showing up to see Charlotte.

I'm Panamanian married to a Cuban, both with tons of relatives and friends in Dade County and yes they are all football fans. Dumbest comment of the summer so far. The problem isn't their race or ethnicity. The problem is nobody cares about the schools FIU and FAU are playing....period.

While the number of Hispanics going to college (and being exposed to college football fandom) is growing, in a place like Miami, most of the folks there will continue to root for Miami over FIU, even if they go to school there. Looking at various demographic studies, while there are plenty of Hispanic football fans like Panama and his crew, they are a minority as far as the Latino population goes, since football is, at best, the third or fourth sport after soccer, basketball, and maybe baseball not involving the Marlins. This contrasts to the AA and White populations.
Also, SE Florida is a completely different world compared to most areas of the US with a Hispanic population because of the Cuban population. Still, because of the distance from Miami and proximity to a potential fanbase that is more demographically attractive based on income, educational outcomes, and current demographics, I would have to go with FAU over FIU in having the potential to attract a fanbase. That being said, neither of them will be able to work themselves into a situation where a traditional power conference would take them on.

RE: FAU and FIU: will they ever gain a following?
FAU and FIU are very young schools that used to be finishing schools for area JCs. FAU didn’t start until 1964 and didn’t add the full four years until 1984. It hasn’t had time for grads to leave endowments and athletics at DI is relatively new. FIU didn’t have its first enrolled student until the early 1970’s and was essentially the finishing school for Miami-Dade JC.
It takes a generation or two to get a loyal fan base. Their FBS programs are still infants.

That's bogus.
People say the same thing about San Diego. But I just lived in San Diego for three years and its BS - there's very little to do there.
There's two things holding back sports in San Diego and Miami: 1) Most of the rich people are transplants who root for out-of-town teams, and 2) it's tourist town with an awful education system, so the people who grew up there disproportionately work in low-paying tourism industries, and therefore are much poorer than the national average.

Sure, if you are graduating 5k / year. They have 30k+ students, you quickly build a large alumni base at that rate.
When we ask the FAU fans, they say there is just too many entertainment options for people in south FL.
My guess is after a FAU student graduates, they go buy their UF or FSU season tickets.

They get tickets for the 3 big games Miami has each year and watch FSU or UF at home, since you are talking about a 5 hour drive to Gainesville and a 7 hour one to Tallahassee.

There may not be much to do for many people but people don't move to San Diego for sports and the same is true of Florida south of the Panhandle.

I would go a bit further south in the middle of the state. Gainesville isn't in the panhandle. It is, however, far enough north of Orlando and away from the beaches to really have little going on besides sports during the seasons. Also, the panhandle part only applies to areas around Tallahassee, since once you get to Panama City and west you have the Gulf as an attraction that's adjacent to most of the population.

Gainesville is basically in the Panhandle and it is basically at the same longitude as parts of the more recognized parts of the Panhandle.

Most Latinos in South Florida are now 2nd and 3rd generation. The problem is not their ethnicity but rather that they root for Florida and UM. Broward is solidly UF. FIU and FAU the same problem as G5s that everyone else does. Out of 60 or so G5s how many avg more than 30k in attendance?
I have heard the same arguments about Atlanta; that Atlanta and GSU's demographics work against us for college football attendance. Yet those same GSU students have no problem going to visit their friends in Tuscaloosa or Athens to party and watch their games.
The issue is you wake up in South Florida Paradise on Saturday and if your options are the beach or some other outdoor festival vs. watching MTSU or Charlotte then we know who is going to win that entertainment dollar battle. And that is nothing against Charlotte or MTSU.

Its HOURS from the Panhandle. But it is at the same longitude. However the Panhandle is pretty much all fairly close to the Gulf beaches. Gainesville is nearer the Atlantic beaches.
