I agree 100%. There are some animals that should NEVER be hunted.
Rhinos, Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Dogs, Cats, Horses, Whales, Pandas, etc....
I agree you shouldn't be able to hunt a threatened species or (obviously) animals that belong to someone else.
But holding different moral standards for different animals based just on how majestic or how fluffy and cute they are is BS and people have to fight that tendency.
I kind of cringe thinking about Asian cultures that eat dog but when we eat cows and pigs there's no real way to claim moral high ground there, so I don't try.
Not all animals are equal. A dog is FAR above that of a cow or pig on the zoological ladder.
For me, a dog is a "god" while a cow or pig is an amoeba. The dog is a morally superior creature to that of the cow or other type livestock.
Anyone that eats dog should not be allowed into this country. IMO, it is a taboo that should be considered just a small step below that of cannibalism.
You're right, not all animals are equal, but that doesn't mean we should force our "equality scale" on other cultures.
We consider dogs to be man's best friend. Other countries don't. If they come HERE, they should do as we do, but when they're on their OWN country, they should be allowed to do as THEY see fit and believe.
Complete BS. American/Western culture is superior in every way to every other third world hellhole backwards, 3rd century craphole.
I'll take it further, If I was Trump, I would remove all troops from the DMZ until they combat their dog meat trade. Any country that eats dog and cat is a backwards culture that is unworthy of respect.
You want to know why America is so advanced ?
You want to know why other countries haven't put as so much as one satellite into space ?
It is because our culture is superior to theirs. And they know it. Why they hate us. IMO, the refugee crisis should be kicked aside by the UN and the crisis of the Chinese and Koreans eating cat and dog should spark international outrage.
You want this world to advance ?
Either let other countries wither on the vine -or- force them to Americanize. Worked for Japan. And they don't eat cat and dog.

While I have no desire to go to Africa and do a hunt like this I have to question your opinion on this. She hunted this animal in a legal and ethical manner. No different than someone who employed a guide to kill a moose, mountain goat, or big horn sheep.I have no problem with folks booking a hunt with a reputable guide and going to Africa for a hunt.
I don't have any problem with this. How is this any different than deer hunting except that its a giraffe?

Personally, I wouldn't do anything like this.
BUT
She was on a LEGAL hunt. It was LEGAL to kill the animal she did. Some of these countries make $$$ allowing foreigners to go on "safari" and hunt trophy animals. It's a big portion of some regions income.
Maybe we should realize that just because we as Americans find something repulsive doesn't mean the rest of the world feels the same way.
So I ask, which is worse, killing a giraffe on a legal big game hunt or allowing people who depend on these hunts as a way of life to starve? I mean, it's not like these folks can head over to Manpower and get a variety of temp jobs......
If I were in charge, I'd strip her citizenship and deport her. I'll take it one step further too, eating dog and cat should be a serious crime. Much akin to cannibalism or bestiality.
Oh, and Africa. Fertile land. No reason to starve there. The people there are too many, IMO. Need to introduce massive sex ed and family planning so the population can be managed. Or, as I prefer it, get the hell out of Africa. Missionaries included. They are part of the problem IMO.
That's a slippery slope.
Stripping citizenship based on YOUR morality?
So what's next? Stripping citizenship from a guy who went to Amsterdam for a weekend of drugs and hookers?
You're right, Africa has many population issues but that's a completely different subject.
Point is we what we do here is our business, what they do there is theirs.

What does this mean? You know that probably every mammal that we get meat from is probably smarter than the smartest dog breeds, right? Especially the pigs.
Isn't cognition really why we say we have more rights than animals in the first place?
When pigs can lead the blind around come back and talk.
Pigs could easily do that from a cognitive standpoint. The issue is that they are bigger and more costly and more difficult to care for. And does that mean you'd be okay with eating chiuaua's and other small dog breeds no one would ever use as service dogs? And what about cats? Whoever heard of a service cat or a drug-sniffing cat?
Quit trying to move the goal posts. You lost this one.
No. You're just wrong. Pigs are much smarter than dogs. The reason we have dogs is that we can help each other. They helped us hunt and we fed them with the hunt. Pigs are more scavengers than hunters.
The reason we have cats is they eat the mice we attracted with our grain.

It should still be THEIR CHOICE.
I for one don't want to start the "Purity Police" to deem what's appropriate for OTHER cultures in their own country.

"If you need a seeing eye animal but a horse and dog are not to your liking, you can opt to select another furry guide animal – a pig. Pigs are renowned for their intelligence and are much smarter than dogs. But that’s not the only thing that makes a pig a great guide animal. Pigs are fantastic at concentrating on their tasks, are highly incentivized by nature to perform tasks for rewards, and are not as aggressive as dogs are for human affection."

As long as it is legal in S. Africa so be it. BTW there are bigger issues there. Their Congress passed a law that would allow the government to seize land from white farmers without compensation.

How did I move the goal posts? You gave a list of animals you think should never be hunted, then talked about how they were "zoologically" better without telling me what that means, and then change the subject to service dogs for some reason.

I'm not sure. I'm not sure what the allure of killing a giraffe is either. Again I'm not into hunting animals for trophy. This past year I went on my first bear hunt. My wife asked what the plan was if I killed one. I said skin it, and take the meat to a processor. She freaked out about eating one. But like I told her, I don't go hunting to just kill. The meat is good and considered a delicacy. She asked why I didn't eat snakes. Told her first off I don't go looking to kill snakes and secondly how does she know we haven't.

I said it once before and I'll say it again: Some animals, IMO ONLY, should NEVER be hunted: dogs, cats, rhinos, giraffes, primates, elephants, big cats, whales, endangered species, etc...(although there are some exceptions I do not believe this to be one, IMO)
That said, I really find it ironic that so many of my fellow conservative/libertarian types are getting as triggered at my opinion towards this matter as much as a stereotypical liberal would. (And for the record, if one does not like what this woman did, that does not make you a liberal. Quit having such tunnel vision)
Then again, if my opinion bothers you so much, the ignore feature is there for you for a reason. Please use it.

Personally, I wouldn't hunt to eat any meat eating animal. You did notice I didn't say "ever eat" a meat eating animal, I'd do it in a pinch. But the only animals I'd eat if I wasn't starving would be those that eat plants. I'd say this woman should have used better judgment. If the giraffe was a rare specimen he shouldn't have been killed especially since it would be no fun killing one versus killing a lion or an animal that could kill you in return.

America wasn't even the first. And the U.S. only managed it with the help of a load of 1940s Germans and those guys did worse things than shoot cats or elephants.

Way I see it is simple, the dog, next to the human, the cat, and a few other animals, is the most morally superior animal God or aliens or whatever created. And, IMO, I like dogs. And I don't like people who don't.
