RE: 2018 Wins
The top of the conference are holding the pieces of their success together.
The middle of the conference are hoping another year of consistency will lead to success.
The bottom of the conference has completely reloaded from last year (save for TXST) and are expecting huge turn-arounds.
This is going to be an interesting year for the Belt for sure.
Georgia Southern is hard to predict right now, but here's what we know so far:
Coaching: The level of coaching will be night and day from last season. Chad Lunsford is entering his first full year as head coach after being the interim head coach the last six games of last season. Coach Lunsford has been at GS for 10 years now as an assistant coach. He's seen what works and what doesn't, he's worked under coaches like Jeff Monken (Army HC, 2017 coach of the year) and Willie Fritz, and he has pre-established relationships with all the guys on the team because he's the one who recruited them. That is an automatic advantage over the other teams in the conference with first year head coaches. Also for the first time since 2015, we will have FBS-caliber coordinators calling the shots on offense and defense. Our OC, Bob DeBesse, is a 30-year coaching veteran who ran a very productive, record-setting, Willie Fritz Style option offense at New Mexico. Our DC, Scot Sloan, spent the past 8 seasons at App State as a secondary coach turned defensive coordinator. He's familiar with all the teams in the Sun Belt already and has been friends with Chad Lunsford for years. These two coaches have said in interviews that GS is the most cohesive and friendliest working environment they have ever worked in which has gone a long way to be able to hit the ground running, pun intended.
Offense: Yes, GS will return strictly to the gun option, Fritzkreig offense of 2014-2015. Both Lunsford and DeBesse have learned that offense from Willie himself and are ready to re-implement it on the field. We are loaded with talented RBs, WRs, LBs, etc. Our biggest ?'s are in QB and the OL, the two gears that make an option offense work. QB Shai Werts was a freshman last year, practically the whole team was. I believe that with more experience and a better coached OL, Werts will start to show his true potential. Hopefully the OL will be better coached this year. A better OL would give Werts more time to make QB decisions which is what he lacked last season. Overall, positive outlook ahead.
Defense: I think defense is actually our strongest part of the team right now. Having Sloan's expertise will also make a huge difference in a lot of games this season. Our D sure got a lot of action last season, pun not intended. Our sloppy Offense made sure they got plenty of in game reps. We are switching up defensive schemes to more of what App State was doing recently. That's not a bad thing at all. Overall, very positive outlook.
Prediction: I know that everyone is expecting 6 wins this coming season, so this might sound cliche, but I firmly believe that 6 maybe 7 wins are attainable this year. We have a very favorable schedule this season, our young team from last year has matured, and we have seasoned coaches with lots of experience at the helm for the first time in a few years. I see 4 easy wins and 4 toss up games on our schedule. 6-7 wins is completely realistic. GATA
