Good listen and thanks 70's. He certainly feels more comfortable now that he's seen the league. And, I think that the program is now under control and set for future success. The additions to the program are exciting and complement the returning team well. They have to pieces to play some exciting and competitive ball. I'm looking forward to next year and the future.

It's actually a great interview, well worth the time to watch/listen. That was the second time that I can remember McGrath saying that he took for granted that the returning players understood how to execute certain defensive schemes, which it turned out they did not.

I guess i should have talked with him early last year and let him know that defense was not on the agenda unless you count the bogus full court press that was run. Get the ball over half court and it was basically score at will if you had two good pick and roll guys.

So, jumpinmullet is responsible for last year's poor record? Good to see him take the blame.

Damned full court press. Probably the reason we had such a bad record.

I'm with 82Hawk in his belief that the press can be a midmajor's Great Equalizer. I don't know if The Mullet is right in his assessment of how deficient Keatts's press was.
But McGrath's point in the interview was that he didn't know much, if anything, about how to coach pressing teams and was going to implement the one system that he knew - Roy Williams half court man to man. The mistake that he acknowledges is not abandoning the press, but assuming that the Keatts press at UNCW utilized the same principles as the Roy Williams half court man to man - and thus assuming that UNCW players were familiar with the defensive principles that he was trying to implement.
McGrath from this interview:
"I overlooked a lot of things that I thought they might have known, especially defensively....I only played or coached for one man, Roy Williams, and that's they only system I've seen.
So you don't know what it's like to coach a zone every day, or what it's like to coach a pressing team..I don't know, I've never seen it before...I just assumed a man to man defense, if its a press, was very similar to half court man to man. They didn't know half court man to man concepts like I though they did, so we had to go back to teaching them.."

Success at the CAA level, but not teaching a lick of half court D is why we couldn't get over the hump against the big dogs.

McGrath prepping for Year 2 at the helm at UNCW
This is why we can’t have nice things. Lol
Overall, great interview.
We all have ideas and tend to be selectively accurate on some topics. End of the day, we’re not the coaches because we don’t know the game at the elite D1 college level like the folks that have those jobs.
I’m excited for this coming season. We have returning veterans, one of who could go down as one of the greatest Seahawks of all time. We have incoming talent that could make immediate impacts.
Let’s see where we go!

I really hope we see coach, and the team grow in year 2. Making adjustments, being competitive in every game etc.
