Off Topic Tornado Warning in CT
Wild times, I have never been told to seek shelter from a Tornado in CT in my life. It was interesting to see everyone get the emergency all at the same time.

RE: Off Topic Tornado Warning in CT
Just FYI, they hand out tornado warnings like candy on Halloween nowdays.
Some meteorologist sees a wild pixel on their weather radar, soils himself and slams down the red button.
Meanwhile the local TV stations cut into programming and immediately send out a trucks to find some 90 year old lady with a branch down in her front yard to interview.
Then they wonder why nobody listens to them if there is a real tornado.

The local Connecticut news/weather goes crazy when there are conditions that could produce a tornado... Similar to when the deep South gets a few inches of snow and treats it like a blizzard.

Wish we got snow. Its 4 inches of ice here in God's country. Tornados, earthquakes, wildfires, hurricanes. The legislature just cut taxes again so I'm sure a volcano or two will make their way from the high tax Hawaii.

We had a tornado warning here in Columbus right before I left work Tuesday. As per usual with tornado warnings here, nothing really happened... we get a weak one occasionally, but nothing like the F-4's we would get in Cincinnati growing up. Severe weather is much less likely up here even though it's only an hour and a half up I-71.

With Fracking you got the next best thing to a volcano. Just go in the back yard and light your well water on fire or so I've heard. I'll take 10 inches of snow all day everyday over even a small tornado's BTW. Heck hurricanes move so slow you could ride your bike and still get away from them if you had any sense. I don't stick around for hurricanes, the last 2 small hurricanes we've had I'll go hang out in Boone. Completely avoidable.
I drove through Joplin 6 months after it happened, I never won't to see anything like that and F4's can pop up about anywhere unexpectedly. It's not that but it opened my eyes to the damage and how fast those big tornados can take you out.

To counter this argument ... nearly EVERY time there is a large tornado that does damage .. there is 3-5 days of warning that there will be a severe weather day ahead. You have plenty of time to prepare. They are rarely "unexpected"

I'm aware of Torcon ratings, we get a few high days around here too, but if you left the state every time tornado's were expected that's not very feasible. Where are you going anyway, the threat seems to extend across the entire country for those type of weather systems as they move so it's not like you are getting away from the threat by going anywhere reasonable. Other than staying close to your underground bunker or sleeping in a bunker I don't think there's much preparation you could do. Is that what people actually do out there or just hope it doesn't drop on their house seems to be the attitude I've seen and go about their daily life. That's what we do here but the threat is certainly less for the ones that could wipe out entire structures.

You can be prepared to go in a basement in the very unlikely event that a tornado hits your house ...

Do most homes there have basements or storm shelters? That's what I would have concern about or getting stuck out in town at the gas station or under an overpass or sleeping through a warning or storms. That's always what you see in these videos.

In the regions that normally get a lot of tornados .. yes they do.

I read an article where less than 20% of new homes built in the South in the last 5 years had basements. (Compared to almost 80% of homes built in New England.)

Lived through a tornado in Greenville when I was 9 years old. 10 o'clock at night, blew away the roof, ceilings collapsed, blew out the windows and trees fell all over the house. Destroyed our station wagon. Very scary. If you feel pressure in your ears like being at the bottom of a deep pool, something is about to happen.

Far south (like Texas), it's extremely expensive to add basements due to how hard the ground is.

I'm surprised it's that high. You can't have basements in most of eastern NC is my understanding. It's to near the water table and moist without installing humidifiers and extreme drainage systems that aren't feasible. I would imagine it's like that in most of the south.
