Baseball host UNO
From UNO website:
https://www.unoprivateers.com/news/2018/...eason.aspx

The University of New Orleans (25-28) looks to upset No. 13 University of Southern Mississippi (36-14) in the final road game of the regular season Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park.

The Privateers are coming off a three-game sweep of Nicholls State University that put UNO in the eighth (via tiebreaker) and final spot of the Southland Conference Tournament May 23-27.

Owen Magee was named Southland Hitter of the Week following his cycle Friday. The senior third baseman hit .643 with five RBI and four runs scored in the three victories over the Colonels. Beau Bratton has reached base safely in 23 consecutive games and is batting .308 on the year with a team-high 36 RBI. Pearce Howard, Magee and Cody Ducote are tied for the team lead in home runs with six.

Matthew Gillis is expected to get the start – his first as a Privateer. He is 1-0 with a 4.56 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 23.1 innings. Opponents are batting .207 off the southpaw. John Barr was sensational Friday to lower his earned run average to 2.24 and the right-hander continues to pace the club with five wins. Barr struck out four in 3.0 innings in Friday's win over Nicholls after forcing the Colonels to strand the bases loaded in the seventh.

Reeves Martin has seven saves and a 2.94 ERA in 23 appearances. The bullpen and defense shined in Sunday's 12-5 win over Nicholls, allowing just four hits in 8.2 innings while striking out two.

Jarod Wright will get the call for Southern Miss and the right-hander is 3-1 with a 5.27 ERA. The Golden Eagles are hitting .300 as a team with 57 long balls, led by Luke Reynolds' and Matt Wallner's 13 apiece.

Hopefully we wil have our hitting mindset on today and not take so many pitches down the middle with runners in scoring position.

can’t hit????

so, every 1000 appearances yields 29 fewer hits....

yeah, that’s a difference maker....

Jfc w/o any supporting data why that matters long term

did anyone give consideration how we approach the plate when in same side situation.....nah....not a snowball’s..:

Certainly you folks don't believe that it is pure chance that UNO is giving this kid his first start ever.

Simple approach at the plate. Big hitters up, runners on base, swing at pitches down the middle. Easier to hit your pitch early in the count rather than his late in the count. For some reason we have an opposite philosophy. Swing away with no runners on, and take two strike with runners in scoring position. Killed us against a better than average team in Tech..

So are you trying to say that statistics don't matter in whether we are good vs LHP or not?

I'm saying that opposing coaches take note.

La Tech needed a win Sunday. They threw two lefties at us and we had no answer.

UNO is following suit. Or at least attempting.

RE: Baseball host UNO
Found this from the thread prior to the earlier game this season at UNO:

Dating back to 2008, USM has won 16 of 17 meetings against New Orleans. Half of those 16 wins by Southern Miss in that span have been decided by three runs or fewer.

so that can now be changed to "Since 2008, USM has won 17 of 18 meetings with 9 of the 17 wins by 3 runs or fewer"

I'm not sure coaches throw LHP against us because "we can't hit left handed pitching". They are probably just throwing them because we have a heavy lefty line-up.

Stats show that we have faced roughly 37% LHP vs 63% RHP. If your logic were true, why would we not see a heavier percentage of LHP? We actually have a higher SLG% vs LHP.

BA
LHP - .291
RHP - .311

OBP
LHP - .385
RHP - .418

SLG
LHP - .475
RHP - .462

Just curious where you are getting those numbers. I’ve been wanting more situational statistics.

Error, hit batter, walk, double. We can’t pitch our way out of a garbage sack. If we could only hit left handed pitching.
