Exactly what I was thinking. Funny you don't see or hear from them when their team is crapping the bed.

unless I missed it, what I'm surprised nobody has mentioned is the actual premise and importance of the thread title....

if they perform as many expect, this gives them a real possibility to obtain a first ever cusa access bowl bid....

I can't remember the last time a cusa team was ranked that high (if ever) in a preseason poll....

it's pretty obvious the writers are hanging their hat on Kiffen.....if it was a no name coach with the same resume, the Owls would be lucky get a vote.....

regardless, this is good for the conference to have more eyeballs focused on the 'what if'....

Agreed. This is great for CUSA. We have had multiple teams finish the season ranked but we haven't had a CUSA 3.0 (or whatever this latest one is) ranked in the pre-season.

The players didn't suddenly become more talented......they just became well-coached. FAU wasn't the most talented team in the conference and they won't be this year either. But good coaching and knowing how to use players based on their respective skill sets is often paramount to pure talent, especially in a conference like this. The talent gap among teams in this conference is not large......it isn't like say......Alabama and Vanderbilt or Clemson and Wake Forest. The gap in pure talent between say......UTEP and FAU is not nearly as wide as that of Alabama and Vanderbilt. The main difference is coaching. UTEP hasn't had a competent football coach in years and it shows. Before Kiffin, FAU was similar.

A repeat conference championship is all but inevitable for FAU. He makes other coaches look completely clueless.

Our team was never bad, our coaches were purely incompetent. We actually have been the most talented team in the conference for a while. Our avg recruit rankings are usually towards the top of CUSA if not #1.

2015 - CUSA Avg Recruit Rank #3
2016 - CUSA Avg Recruit Rank #2
2017 - CUSA Avg Recruit Rank #1
2018 - CUSA Avg Recruit Rank #1

The last two classes were both Lane, but to say our team wasn’t talented is a lie. I watched every game and I know bad coaching when I see it. We made terrible second half adjustments after the opposing coaches figured us out. We blew so many 2-3 touchdown leads in the second half it was disgusting. We had Alabama tied at half, we lost by 40. We had Florida down by 3 at half, we lose in OT. We had UM tied at half, we lost by 30. I watched Middle Tennessee, ODU, Marshall, Ball State, and UTEP beat us in the last 4 minutes of the game. The coaches were bad, not the players.

Yes, FAU has always been a powerhouse. Good God i can't wait for the season to start. FAU squeaked by Marshall with Legg last season, and lost so many against the worst OC on the planet. Not worried about FAU or kiffin.

I don't disagree, but we'll find out right out of the gates as the Owls open in Norman. They very likely need to keep that game close to have any shot, if they get beaten soundly by the Sooners, even at 11-1 I expect someone would have a better resume. At 11-1 with a close loss in Norman they're in the discussion if there's not an unbeaten G5 in another conference.

Two future draft picks at LB.
Motor is the most dynamic player in this conference.

Nope.
You really think you'd be saying that same thing if you hired a bad coach with the same players and went 4-8 last year? Kiffin has made them BETTER.

Good coaches get more out of their players because they know how to best use them. It isn't a coincidence. It's not like FAU has ever been great at recruiting. Their recruiting is middling like everyone else in this conference. Let's be honest with ourselves.

You need to be honest with yourself another Florida school has passed old has been USM.

I just said y'all would breeze by the conference this year, goofball.

At the same time, Lane Kiffin is the sole reason for FAU's success. Don't be naive and think otherwise. He turned around a perenial cellar-dweller in one year.
How is having a few bad seasons make you a perenial cellar-dweller?
We have not had a program long enough to be perenial anything. Since FAU joined C-USA USM is three games better than FAU with both being under .500.
USM fan do not want to accept we are passing them as a program.
Better Stadium, better recruiting bigger budget, better falcilties.

In 20 years USM fans will be fighting with Florida Tech fans about how rich the USM history is as your coaches bail to that school.

Maybe in 20 years you'll be bragging about your one "great" C-USA Championship...

We are certainly 'down" for USM right now, but you guys have been "down" and pathetic "has beens" your school's entire short history, except for one decent year..

But if being honest you would take a hammer to your left nut to be where FAU is today. And last Dec.

For the record FAU has as many (2) conference championships as S. Miss since FAU started playing football in 2004. Well actually I'm wrong....S. Miss has to go back to 2003 to get their 2nd.

You are correct FAU might drop back to a nobody 3 win team when they lose their coach. Hell thats the case for all of us....

it sure was for S. Miss even with all that history

Looks like your mighty Hillpoppers are having a case of "Too-many-Head-Coaches-itis", just like USM...and won't be long til FAU suffers from it to (since it is very contagious in C-USA)04-cheers

....and No, I couldn't care less being where FAU supposedly is right now...and at least I HAVE A LEFT NUT! 03-lmfao

no question about it.....however, it's easier to come back from #17 to #24-30 vs. starting at #40....

this is a proving ground moment for them....I can only pull for success at this point....

however, it wouldn't hurt my feelings at all to take 'em down in the championship game (if it were to happen) in the same vein when we made the Youston fans cry that glorious day a handful of years ago....

it's all going to change again in a handful of years......might as well pull for a spotlight bowl appearance while we have the opportunity before we all geographically realign and they revamp the entire playoff system....you know deep down that's just a matter of time

Congrats to you Owls. That kind of recognition is not easy to come by. Good luck this season on getting a higher ranking than they have you at going into the season. This conference needs a team to bust out on the national scene again.

All coaching, FAU talent is mediocre.. Kiffen was going for it on 4th downs on his own 20yd line and trick plays galore. Thats what it takes to win with less talented teams.

The ranking is way too high IMO. Their pass defense is bad. Tech put up over 500 yards on that defense. But we lead all of the NCAA in failed red zone attempts.

Their offense playcalling, taking risks and converting trick plays won football games for them and that is all coaching.

I will disagree with you on the premise: FAU did have 4 straight years of top recruiting (or near the top) in the C-USA. So, the talent is there. Singletary wowed everyone in the 6 games he played his freshman year, before Kiffen arrived.

So, yes, FAU had been a victim of sub-par coaching. but not even Kiffin can do anything with bad recruits. Now, he is doing it with top recruiting classes in the conference.

This mentality is silly. If you bash new posters how will you grow the fan base? Let them be excited their team is playing well... Maybe they will stick around if FAU starts to go the other direction. They had a great season last year and have every reason to be excited for the 2018 season.

You don’t know much about football. You La Tech fans hang you hats on the yards you threw vs us but that was FAU’s style. They didn’t care about giving up first downs and force turnovers. That crap secondary lead the league in interceptions by a long ways. If you watched us all year lots of teams moved the ball in between the 20’s on us and we always tightened up in the redzone. We gave up the least amount of runs over 15 and pass plays over 30 in the league.
Your not even close to being talented as us. Just think that team that beat you by 25 was starting mostly sophomores and juniors. Lane going for on 4th and 1 at our own 20 on the shows he has not respect for your talent. We scored on 1 trick play and yet you make it seem like that all we did.

USM and La Tech fans are so salty.
Even Marshall fans give up credit when it due for the most part.
If you guys fail to relize that FAU is a great program for this league that’s on you.
Please tell why you guys are so much better for this league?
We have better stadium, in a better area for living and recruiting, about 20 percent higher athletic budget.
