Three weekends left...here's where the teams stand
We know Coastal is going to be the top seed.
We know App isn't going to make the tournament

But what about the rest?

RE: Three weekends left...here's where the teams stand
We always seem to play our best baseball in May, and we always seem to have weird amounts of success against Texas State. Which may have something to do with always playing them in May.

Still, our pitching situation is a mess. Both Welsh and Alberius pretty much have to go deep on Friday and Saturday to give us a chance because we simply don't have the pitching to compete on Sunday. I guess we'll have a slight advantage this week in knowing ahead of time that our #3 starter is out, but we're still looking at 3-4 innings of pitchers with 12 plus ERA's minimum on Sunday. That's just not a good thing unless the offense morphs into the 27 Yankees for the day.

Still, with ULM/GSU playing each other, we know that if we were to win two games, we'd be at worst a half game back of 10th at the end of the weekend. Considering where we were after the Troy series, it's pretty hard to believe.

RE: Three weekends left...here's where the teams stand
Our goal for the rest of the season:
1. Don't fall any lower than sixth and end up in the play-in game (duh).
2. End up in the West champion's half of the bracket.
3. Pull for the Cajuns to end up in Coastal's half of the bracket.

Since we most likely can't catch Coastal that would be the catbird's seat right there. It would be worth throwing a game if it would guarantee getting that.

Of course, we'll probably end up playing the Cajuns again with their best pitcher in the tournament. Always seems destined.

It's going to be difficult for all of that to transpire. In order for the Cajuns to wind up on Coastal's side, they would have to finish fourth or fifth. With Troy and South ahead right now, that would make them almost have to be fifth.

Which means you'll have to lose some games and finish sixth.

Under your scenario, that's what you're probably looking at.

You'd be better off holding serve and finishing fifth while the Cajuns win the West. That puts you on Coastal's side but you've proven you can beat them.

I think having some success this weekend is big for the Red Wolves. Georgia Southern can pitch and they hit just well enough to do some damage. Personally, I don't believe ULM will make the tournament if they don't win the series this weekend. Troy is playing well and they can't count on beating the Cajuns at Russo on senior weekend.

If you win the series this weekend I think you're good.

And, this is nothing against any other team, but not having Arkansas State in the tournament isn't a good thing for the league in my opinion.

The pitching situation isn't too indifferent from us. We've been searching for a solid #3 guy in the rotation all year but the three guys that have gotten opportunities have all been ultra inconsistent. Just off the top of my head I know our starter hasn't gotten out of the 3rd on a Sunday for three straight weekends and wouldn't be surprised if its more.

We usually play our worst ball in May. And we got off to a hell of a start blowing a 4 run 9th inning lead to lose on May 1st. We badly need to win this series in Jonesboro but as you noted we always seem to struggle with the Red Wolves for some reason. Should be an interesting series.

We're also both weird teams that throw their best pitchers on Saturday. Welsh is our Friday Night guy simply because he was when the season started, and outside of a God awful outing at Georgia State, he's done nothing to lose the spot. Alberius started as our midweek guy, and got moved into the rotation. He almost threw a complete game in Mobile last weekend, and that's nearly impossible to do with the way South takes pitches.

Last years series was my personal favorite. That was the one where Harrington tried to pull one of your starters claiming injury and the umpires didn't believe him. There ended up being a 5 minute conference while the rule book was pulled out. We hit a home run to win the game on the next pitch.

God Bless Sun Belt umpires.

We make the Tournament fun...

Southern is a difficult matchup for us. There pitching is deeper and better than ours, we can't afford to fall behind and hope our offense can bail us out.

Still, we also are hitting better right now than this team has all year. We've got a litany of guys down the lineup who are hitting .300 in League play. It's amazing how this happens every single year.

GS 3 Troy 0 Final. Crane completely destroyed us last year and this year Brian Eichhorn returns the favor.
USA 9 Little Rock 8 top of the 7th I think they're in a rain delay.
Cajuns 10 Coastal 1 Bottom of the 7th

Eichhorn isn’t quite consistent enough to be considered the best pitcher in the Sun Belt. But when he locates both his fastball and his curve, he’s borderline untouchable. The fastball is too fast, the curve is too sharp and late-breaking, and his change is just good enough to keep anyone from being too comfortable even on the third or fourth time through the order.

Astate quiets the Texas state bats in a 6-1 win. Now 12-4 all time against the bobcats. One of those things that’s hard to figure out

To be honest our Friday and Saturday starting pitchers have done fairly well. We have other problems that have deep sixed this season.

It's not this year that's the question. It's every other season. We've had some pretty awful pitchers on Friday and Saturday and still beat these guys.

Nice sweep, but you're 3 games behind ULM (looks like it's getting ready to be 4) and still have to play Coastal. Good luck with that. 04-cheers

What do we need to catch ULM for? Don't we just have to pass Arkansas State and GSU?

Uhh. ULM is in 9th place. Top 10 go to tournament. They are a half game behind 11th place Georgia State and a full game behind 10th place Arkansas State. They play at Georgia State next weekend.

They've got a pretty decent chance. Coastal will make it difficult. But at the same time, AState has to play Georgia Southern and Little Rock, so its not like that stretch is any easier.

Well...we have a four-way tie for second place, and GS and the Cajuns might have ended the league's chance at an at-large bid.
