Haha, BU did actually just buy a small school in Boston that was on the brink of insolvency, but it certainly wasn’t BC.
Back on topic, we offered Da’Joun Hewitt, a back out of Nashville with offers from WKU and Austin Peay.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
On the show ]Rizzoli and Isles, set in Boston, they often referred to the local University as BCU.

IIRC that is different. It was a made up school for the show, Boston Cambridge University

Duh. Of course it was a made up school. Just noting the coincidence.
You thought I thought BCU was real? What a vote of confidence.

Wilcher is/was recently in Chicago, Lembo in North Jersey, Mack west of Atlanta, and Smith W PA and OH....
Might have to break out the GC Map tool like Antarius for this staff.

That would be pretty cool. Have a recruiting tracker that shows where everyone is on the recruiting trail (public information only, of course).

I’d guess flying back to Canada or going down under.
This begs the question. Was our recruiting budget significantly upgraded?
The new coaches have probably had their eyes on these kids while coaching in their last positions. I like the national recruiting scope. It's something Rice needs. The talent pool is too small to limit recruiting to only Texas. I like that we're going after 3-star athletes in such number. I'll like it more if they commit.

I think the answer is obvious.

I originally went to BU and still am a big BU hockey fan, so it's my absolute favorite.

Either that or it is being used/managed better.

Staff seems not to be scared of throwing themselves in with the big boys. New offer out to Sulaiman Kpaka, a 3* DE out of Dallas who has a rough top 3 right now of Kansas, Purdue, and Vanderbilt. Also an offer out to 3* ILB Jacob Wahlberg out of Michigan, who has offers from BC, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, and Purdue.

Agreed. I should be careful here as I don't want to bring up a buried issue. My point in asking what was obvious was with the hope of elucidating how this increased budget came to be. Was the budget always there but the prior regime choose not to utilize it? If so, why? And why the undertones that the recruiting budget had been slashed?
On the other hand, if the recruiting budget available today was not available under the prior coaching staff, what was the rationale for withholding? Was it offered and refused? Was it asked for and denied?
Finally, where is the funding coming from? A look at our coaching staff and you will see prominent assistants; assistants that one would assume would not come to Rice at a discounted rate. So where are these funds coming from? Has the BOT loosened the purse strings?

In fairness to Bailiff's staff, they made offers to plenty of players that had offers from "the big boys." The last couple years have been a bit leaner in this regard, but in the 2015 class, Carl Thompson and Zach Abercrumbia both chose Rice over multiple P5 schools (Abercrumbia had offers from multiple top-25 programs). There were offers to players of this caliber every year that I check, most of them just ended up elsewhere. However, for whatever reason, that staff did not throw as wide of a net.
edit: I believe the Walter brothers also had some pretty impressive offers.

The pattern I discerned was that they made multiple offers to 3* and 4* players early, hoping (I guess) to get interest from two or three that they could pursue, and kind of went down the list from there.
I like the wider net, but last time we did this (Goldsmith?) didn't we have complaints that we were ignoring the gems in our own backyard, Texas and specifically Houston?

Maybe, but there were also multiple instances over the years where they made offers to players that weren't ranked yet and didn't have offers from "the big boys", only to see those players' stock improve heading into their senior seasons and get lots of attention from "the big boys". Rice was one of the few programs to offer Rennie Childs, as a singular example.

At least for this staff for all of the guys traveling around the country we appear to have an equal number in Houston and Dallas.

RE: [split] Mike Bloomgren's 2nd Rice recruiting class
Kind of off topic but concerning the point about international recruiting, I've always wondered why (apart from the costs) more coaches don't try to tap into the rugby markets in England and Australia. I'm sure there are some really athletic, college-aged kids who might be open to trying football for the education.
