RE: Recruit Updates
My guess is that his statement about not recruiting means they haven't been traveling. We all know recruiting happens in a lot more ways than just traveling to see kids. I would almost guarantee that every coach has been in constant contact with their targets to maintain interest until these live periods.

There is nothing more important than recruiting in sports, and nothing else takes precedence. That's a setup for future failure. Also concerned we're recruiting so far from NC. A lot of kids these days have grown up with their parents attending everything they do, and many prefer to stay close enough for that to continue, unless you are top level looking to the NBA.

No bueno.

There's a link to the podcast if you care to listen. It's way to early to claim what is a huge mistake or not. C.B. is a head coach for a reason, I trust his judgement on these kind of things. Keatts' recruiting class after his first season had 1 guy from NC, same as McGrath has already in this class. Let's see what the man can do first before we start to criticize him a week into the signing period.

RE: Recruit Updates
Not having an out of state tuition exemption anymore makes it tough for us to afford non-NC recruits. But cost aside, I'm all for looking outside the state. Yeah, we run the risk of those kids getting homesick, or maybe graduating early and leaving as a grad transfer to play closer to home. But other mid-majors have had success at doing so. Hell, just look at how many kids VCU got from not only out of state, but out of the country.

NC simply has way too much competition to try to plant our flag. I'm not saying we shouldn't recruit kids in-state. Somewhere in the 65-80 % sounds about right.

Some of our best players ever also weren't NC kids. John Goldsberry was from Ohio. TJ Carter was from Maryland. Cacok is from Georgia. And there was also this kid named Brett Blizzard who did pretty well here, despite being a Florida kid.

During that same time period we got several from Texas too. Coombs, Burnette, Anthony Terell

Yep. The Rodney Terry connection.

We might not quite have a Rodney Terry-caliber recruiter on this staff, but Doug Esleeck seems to be pretty well connected in non-NC circles. Mercer, where I believe Esleeck was the top recruiter since 2014, has had kids from all over the place the last few years. Looking at their current roster, they've got players from Oklahoma, Florida, California, Texas, Tennessee, and of course Georgia.

Mercer is a private university, however, so take the above for whatever its worth.

RE: Recruit Updates
I am simply expressing concerns. Nothing rises above recruiting. And, the tuition issue for out-of state athletes has a huge financial impact on out athletic budget. Back when we did well out-of-state, there was no additional cost in bringing those players to UNCW. I have also noticed that parents and kids are more interested in the parents being able to attend games in a local region. I'm not saying the results won't be good in the end, but what I know is out there is of concern.

RE: Recruit Updates
The above listed showcases certainly present opportunities to find a player that may have fallen through the cracks. This is how we found Gary last year. Also, there are showcases for unsigned JUCO prospects that will come up too.

On a side note, I believe Shawn O'Connell is a Grad Transfer they are looking at bringing in. He's an athletic big, that can stretch the floor with a left handed jumper. Also, the older brother of Duke Guard Alex O'Connell. Below is a link to a highlight video of him, looks pretty good, stats aren't all that great though.

Jervae Robinson is visiting Washington State today. That's 3 out of his 5 official visits now used.

Looks like he won't need his final two visits. He signed with WSU today. On to the next one.

I really thought he would've fit well in our system. Hard to compete with P5 schools though.

Doug Esleeck tweeted out last night "Great Day to be a Seahawk." I have noticed in the past that when he tweets this out that a commitment is soon to follow. We might be hearing some good news soon. I'm thinking it's in regards to Shawn O'Connell.

Can't criticize a kid for pursuing his dream, and making a decision that's best for him. I always think of Urlacher's advice to his brother in these circumstances though. It's better to go to where you'll be THE guy rather than JAG. I don't Jervae's circumstances or WSU's roster, so maybe he can be THE guy there. In general, it seems so many kids get caught up in the program or conference that they don't consider their own development.

In the end, I suppose it really comes down to the individual, so all we can do is wish him well and move onto the next recruit.

In terms of long-term impact, I hope it is Braun, but O'Connell would provide some much needed post depth, plus he comes in experienced and buys the staff another recruiting cycle to fill holes. I'll be excited for either.

He only averaged 3p 3r in 12 min all 3 years, so I only see him as a backup for someone. http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketb...n-oconnell

Braun has been picking up a lot of interest from P5 Schools lately, Ole Miss offered, LSU and Creighton have also been in contact. I would be very surprised if it was him. I also see O'Connell as a bench player, however I do see him being a steady rotation guy. (15-25 minutes per game) There still hasn't been an official release, but I'm almost certain it's O'Connell.

Not to read the tea leaves too much, but O'Connell did "like" the tweet.

I noticed that as well... Also, the UNCW Basketball instagram account is following him. He is the only person that account follows that's not a part of the program. (The Account only follows 17 people) So I think it's safe for us to assume it's him. Some people might think this is a lame way to go about it, but reading tea leaves is about the closest thing to "inside info" we have at UNCW until something official is released.
