Even with all the Kiffin hype and a 11-3 break out season they couldn't manage 19K per game in a metro area of over 6 million people. Then again, they've never drawn very well.
2017 - 18,948
2016 - 10,073
2015 - 17,617
2014 - 11,950
2013 - 15,450
2012 - 13,600
2011 - 18,400
1010 - 14,000
I'm so very tired of the attendence gripe on this forum. It's a sociological phenomenon that the current generation cares less and less about attending football games. It isn't a problem for a certain school.
For example,
https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...-34-years/
Relevant quotes:
"College sports has long been at odds with how to manage the time/value relationship. In other words, how to make attendance at a live event more valuable than the alternatives, which range from remaining at a tailgate outside the venue to viewing on a smartphone while on the go to watching in the comfort of one's living room."
"It's a technology issue," said Wright Waters, Football Bowl Association executive director and former Sun Belt commissioner. "The public is ahead of us every day in what they can get from technology. We have not been able to keep up."
"One former Power Five athletic director called it a "societal shift" leading the powers that be scrambling to figure out the viewing habits of millennials as well as well-heeled alumni."
TLDR why college football attendance has declined:
1) convenience. why waste money, deal with rowdy crowds, and fight bad traffics to watch a game while being uncomfortable outside...when you can stay home and watch the game with your 60in TV & home theater system in your fuzzy slippers while ordering UberEats from Buffalo Wild Wings?
2) technology. Technological advancements allow ppl to optimize their time by skipping the football games entirely. Watch your games whenever and wherever you want on your smart devices.
2) declining interest. modern students don't consider attending football games as a vital part of the college experience. College football is no longer the ritualistic Saturday experience for typical college students. They just show up sometimes for rivalry games or primetime games on national TV.
Attendance in college football suffered an all-time low in 34years. That said, rural campuses in small towns are somewhat shielded from this societal shift because rural entertainment and economy...perhaps even local pride and cultural identity.....are still built around college football.
Use all the stats and logic you like, but the facts are clear. Some little ole country schools are packing in fans while you mega market urban schools can't draw flies.

You give every team in the SBC an 11-3 record and where would FAU rank? Hypothetical I know, but I would guess most teams in the Sun Belt would eclipse that number.
Hypothetical indeed.
What isn't hypothetical... FAU only had better attendance over one SBC team with a winning record. 3 teams even got a new coach after their season (TXST needs one).
25,787 - App State (9-4)
24,456 - Troy (11-2)
23,908 - Arkansas State (7-5)
18,948 - Florida Atlantic (11-3)
17,447 - Texas State (2-10)
17,345 - South Alabama (4-8 -- new coach)
15,833 - Georgia State (7-5)
15,751 - Louisiana (5-7 -- new coach)
15,258 - Georgia Southern (2-10 -- new coach)
14,959 - Coastal Carolina (3-9)
9,928 - Louisiana Monroe (4-8)
You can't convince me if the schools below FAU raced out to an 11-3 record that most wouldn't have surpassed that number. I mean, FAU increased 88.11% over the previous year. That rate of growth might not be practical, but even if those schools only achieved half the growth rate, 44%, FAU would then place 9th of 10. All I'm saying is you're comparing a special season for FAU against teams that mostly had a disappointing season. If that makes you feel good then congrats.
No comparisons needed, just facts.
And thanks dude it was a pretty special season, now on to the next!

Yeah. I think everyone's chasing the "USF dream". A school with no team or even a stadium starts fb and gets picked up by the country club. But it's a mirage. USF was a mistake that caused the big east to blow up. Country club types don't like the trailer Parker who won the power ball lotto jackpot in their club.
A mirage? USF may not be P5, but they're in much better shape than they would have been if they hadn't managed to outkick their coverage early on. And if they are, indeed, what "blew up" the Big East (which I honestly kinda doubt), then that's what paved the way for other schools to get their shot in the American. The USF dream may not be what it looked like at one point, but man, has it worked out for them.
The Big East was a country club member. They were comprised of 50% either FBS start ups (USF, Uconn) and CUSA call ups (Cincinnati, Louisville) their “legit” teams were Rutgers...Rutgers!? and Pitt, Syracuse and West Virginia. I’m shocked that awful line up was ever allowed membership. It took about 5 years for the announcement they’d been kicked out. USF enjoyed a 6 year membership (2005- 2011) before joining their peers in reality.
Ah, I gotcha. Yes, the landscape is very different now from where it was when the BE was still riding the wave of success from schools like VT and WVU. I guess I'm just thinking that even in the current AAC, the Bulls are doing pretty well for a fairly recent startup that didn't have the basketball history of a UConn. And if a P5 still gives them the nod, the USF plan will have worked out about as well as you could expect.

Universities are more and more indoctrinating the student, particularly the freshman, with anything that can be identified as "tradition".
Traditional U's have the advantage of the more dedicated student and they're taking advantage of it.
That is true, but having been to some of the games of a big name (Alabama, before they expanded Bryant-Denny) program and having been to a Troy Trojans game, I can tell you right now marketing could swing things more towards the Troy Trojans and less towards the big names like Georgia or ‘ Bama. It’s true that your average Sun Belt program won’t be pulling in fans like a ‘Bama or Auburn. However, parking and leaving the game is a lot easier than at those big time programs. I would take my son to a Trojans game before I would take him to a Georgia game because of the sheer number of people at those games!!!! I would say the average Sun Belt or even the average C-USA program should be drawing at least as many fans that come to Wake Forest, Duke, Vandy, etc. That is definitely doable, imo.
A real game changer would be including all of the FBS conferences in the college football playoff. To me, that would make college football more like March Madness, and would get more people to watch. But I think everybody here knows that isn’t going to happen anytime soon unfortunately.

Multi sport out of conference scheduling. Annual H&Hs. Makes more sense to do that first than spend millions changing conferences to achieve the same end and HOPE a rivalry develops.

in this SBC/CUSA realignment fantasy, wouldn't the fees be waived? Anyway, nothing is really happening, at least not anytime soon. I don't think we need to go into the specifics. I do agree we should set up something with UAB regularly. It's a peer institution located only 2hrs away.
