The out of state kids he pulled with one on campus visit is absolutely incredible. We knew his name would open doors if only to get him to sign their Air Penny’s, but to be able to articulate a vision and close on these non-Memphis kids without the advantage of months- to years-long relationships with these kids and their families is way beyond what I thought possible.
He has solid, winning vision for his staff and for his team, and he’s killing it right out of the gate. Im so happy for him, and for us.

Don't know if we've seen anything like this in a very long time. And the precision in which the staff has accomplished this task is equally as eye opening.
The three headed monster of Penny, Madlock and now Miller have certainly become a serious force.
What a story and it's obviously only just begun.
Hasn't been this fun in many years.
I guess Tubby was wrong when he said that the Memphis brand was not what it was 7 years ago...
Shame on some of our fans that believed him.
Tubby is a con that just knows how to coach, who figured out a long time ago how to dupe colleges into paying him millions.

Memphis Basketball is back!
Let's be fair. His name is opening doors. Without it being Penny, they likely wouldn't have even come for a visit. But one campus visit, late in the game, with other opportunities probably closing fast, and our brand new badass facility, playing in an NBA arena, made the difference. It's the package UM provides. Penny is the face and the leader, but I guarantee those kids were in awe of the new facility and the other factors also played a BIG part.

I was on record here wanting Penny years ago. I took shots from folks who claimed he hasn’t done anything before, or he doesn’t want the job because all he wants to do is play golf, or it won’t end well (see Larry Finch). I stood my ground when Keith Easterwood kept telling me how wrong I was.
I wanted Penny when josh was still here. I told him five years ago at the golf course that I wished he was the Tigers coach.

IMO the timing is correct right now. Penny has been able to cultivate a lot of relationships at the AAU level over the past few years that has helped him get a jumpstart in the beginning of his college coaching career. IMHO I don’t think he was ready a few years back.
