I was on record here wanting Penny years ago. I took shots from folks who claimed he hasn’t done anything before, or he doesn’t want the job because all he wants to do is play golf, or it won’t end well (see Larry Finch). I stood my ground when Keith Easterwood kept telling me how wrong I was.
I wanted Penny when josh was still here. I told him five years ago at the golf course that I wished he was the Tigers coach.

IMO the timing is correct right now. Penny has been able to cultivate a lot of relationships at the AAU level over the past few years that has helped him get a jumpstart in the beginning of his college coaching career. IMHO I don’t think he was ready a few years back.

I think the timing has been impeccable. Considering there is a hit song out with his name. Mike Miller has retired from the NBA and available as an assistant. Next season you have some of the best Memphis players in years available.

I am one of the people that SMH when I heard Penny's name being brought up as a possible coach for Memphis back when. With no experience, it will never happen and that maybe it shouldn't happen. I have been a fan since the Bartow days. I am now eating crow thus far and it taste pretty damn good! I expect the future to be brighter. GTG!

Now, now. No need for the name calling. I was one who said that. And it is typically truthful. The first class at a new school is overwhelmingly a weak class in normal conditions. Sure exceptions happen. What we are seeing is not the norm - and I'm thankful for it.

You also had what's proven to be a bad take...

Why would Wiseman pass up going to KY, which is a lottery factory, to play here? It is generally is a foregone conclusion that Cal gets who he want and he wants Wiseman.

Jeffries has only been w/ Penny for one summer in AAU, so it's not like there's some long-standing bond that would keep them together.

The Lawson's likely go where Keelon wants them to go, and if things are working out well at KU, why would they go here? It's not like Keelon and Penny are tight buds.

Lomax is already committed, and Marshall sure as hell won't give him a release to play an in-conference foe, right. Add to that to the coach who likely tampered with him to get him to leave?

Who does that leave for 2018? Boyce? We are really going to do all this (take an unproven guy) to get a 150+ recruit.

Dandridge? He's good, but a 2019 kid, so it would still be a season away.

I'm just approaching it logically.

If the primary idea is that we need to get Penny because of the East kids, that needs to be seriously examined instead of just patently assuming they all just do it.

Now if you want him regardless of getting the East kids, that's a different story.

'Fledgling" makes it sound like he started the program at Texas Tech, lol

Also, no BAM and no Saul on his staff. Interesting.

We can blow his ass up until next season starts and we have some games to talk about, lol.

Not a bad take...the initial thought was that all the East kids would go to Penny.

He flipped Lomax. Impressive and also good that Gregg wasn't a richard about it.

Jefferies--committed to Kentucky.

Wiseman-Memphis has a real chance, but...

We'll see what happens with the Lawsons.

AND--

Getting Harris was HUGE in that most folks never thought that Harris and Lomax would team--especially with possible playing time issues. Huge coup.

The other guys--good get on the JUCO and great to be an immediate landing spot for the A&M recruit.

Penny is kicking ass right now. I am happy and surprised.

I think it was just lazy in regard to recruiting. He simply did not want to do the traveling and calling needed to recruit at a high level...

I think Tubby was just set in his ways. Today's recruits want coaches to call/text more often, and follow them on social media. Tubby did recruiting the same way he has done it since Tulsa, and he would tell you that.
