Lets keep UMass on hold for when UConn drops football and runs off to the Big East.

That means zero need for umass: just another huge outlier

Exactly. Temple can simply become the most northeastern edge of the footprint.

RE: UMass positioning themselves to be in the AAC, apparently
It doesn't seem like there is very much realignment out there on the horizon.
TV money is not expanding for the P5 like it was to drive everyone to 14 team conferences. At least proportionately its not going to be increasing 200-300% like it was.
UMass would be better trying to orchestrate a CUSA East/A10 hybrid conference that would solve some of the issues for those universities rather than simply begging for the AAC all the time.

This is something that would be better I believe for the schools above than A10 or CUSA as presently configured.

I wouldn’t be opposed to adding umass under these long shot scenarios; a massive investment in facilities including an ocs, a long streak (years) of of high or near sellout attendance in revenue producing sports, a long streak (years) of high performance winning in revenue producing sports, and a media guarantee that they’d increase the tv contract.

I’ve said it before—UMAss made a huge mistake walking away from the MAC. That conference was not a bad fit—plus there would have been a regional add—necessary to balance the MAC at 14.

RE: UMass positioning themselves to be in the AAC, apparently
i was walking from my aunt's house nearish division street in southeast portland to the alberta arts district in the northeast. luckily, the only place i found open was a bar. i might have even had to walk around the block until they were open. fifteen minutes after they've open i feel is a good span of time to allow yourself to be the first person in the bar
i took the cute umass grad bartender out to drinks in the pearl district at a bridgeport brewery (of all the breweries). i didn't expect the affair to last and not for obvious reasons such as; here appears a man who drinks before lunch. she knew i was traveling and one drinks before lunch on holiday but coffee woulda been a better look. her name was aly. the raveonettes had a song called aly walk with me. the song goes, aly walk with me, through the streets of portland. i figured she heard that by now so i didn't bring it up

They didn’t have their chance, UMASS was never considered ever for AAC membership.
They had a chance to build up their program in the MAC but they declined all sports in favor of A-10 BB and Olympics. I think it was a mistake. They are foundering in independence with no relevance. In the past 2 years a MAC team made it ti the NY6 bowl. UMASS will never get there as an independent.

Their mind was made up long before UMass walked away from the Mac, nothing was going to keep them from leaving.
The mistake they made imo was neglecting their football stadium, had UMass administration invested in that facility things could be a bit less stressful for them yoday.

Obviously being biased, I think Toledo is a better fit than UMASS for the AAC. Along with ODU or Marshall for that matter.

JMHO but if UMass really wants to 'position themselves' they need a deep NCAA run and to start winning some football games.

Who knows what the future holds, but who ever the AAC's targets are, facility improvements, market and fresh championship achievements will play a significant role in been chosen by Mike Aresco, imho.
IDK if Toledo's goal is to align themselves in a better conference and if so than perhaps facility improvements should be a priority.

Not just that, UofMemphis... Their football stadium needs lots of improvement and while they're at it their basketball arena should be looked at as well.
If UMass does these things I don't see how they can be ignore.

50 million has been invested in facility upgrades within last ten years with more on the way. The Glass Bowl seats 26,240 but was designed to expand to 52,000. Savage Arena was downsized from 9,000 to 7,300 for the sole purpose of reconfiguring, adding luxury suites/loges.
That’s where the $$$ is. Toledo likes the MAC but is similar to Fresno State in the MW and would aspire to possibly upgrade their status. With the landscape of college football changing, I believe UT wants to be in the mix.

Upgrade the seating to at least say 38k - 40k with few nice bells n whistles, brighten up the arena and you guys are on to something.
