Mark in the Park
Is this real?

If so, it's unintentionally (?) giving us some insight into how the athletic department sees Rice fans...

RE: Mark in the Park
I really wish we didn’t have to do silly promotions like this to get fans to the park. I really don’t know what to say about this.

As silly as this seems, the Instragram post has a riceowls link (riceowls.com/mark) ... so that seems legit.

But that link then resolves to the fevo site (link in OP) that includes this statement -- "30,000 people are interested in this event. " -- that makes it seem so ludicrous and fantasy/fictional. Sad.

If we want to get fans in the stands, let’s go with Bill, Bob, Tom, Mike, Jim, Joe, and James in the Park.

I'm very much down with us embracing the Minor League style promotions.

Of the examples in this article (https://www.mlb.com/cut4/10-best-minor-l...-210024660) I hope we stay away from Asparagus Night promotions.

I will say that the Asparagus Festival is delightful with lots of delicious food served.

With other festivals celebrating our local artichoke, mushroom and -- of course -- garlic production, the greater SF Bay Area may be second only to south Louisiana in fun-food-festival density.

(And that's not counting the zillions of wine/beer-related food festivals.)

We certainly need to name an all-Mark team that night. For some reason, I'm blanking on a lot of names I should remember but all I've got so far is Mark Quinn (P/DH), and Marc Gwyn (SP).

What would people suggest that would put butts in the seats? I have no problem with MiLB promotions until the team returns to a national ranking.

Not spectacularly screwing up the contract situation. I know it sounds salty but anything we do at this point short of winning out is rearranging titanic deck chairs and that includes promos like this.

I'd rather the department pivot and focus on actually marketing the Spring game (which we just found out about confirmed) etc.

We have finite resources and we need to allocate it to the best long term (or even short term) revenue projection. Mark in the park may get a few but a well marketed spring game that's actually promoted may long term see several hundred or more in the stands next season.

I think one step would have been not wasting money on the new Roost (the old location/tent was perfectly serviceable) and using the money on things that might actually improve the on-field performance (regular individual sessions with a sports psychologist comes to mind, but I'm sure there are other things that would better serve the players).

You think that the marketing department’s resources are so minimal they can’t both market the Spring Game and come up with Minor League style promotions? And connecting this back to our contract situation is a bit of a stretch - if JK is micromanaging the marketing department so much that this keeps him from focusing on big ticket objectives, we have a problem.

Have you seen any spring game marketing? I haven't- and it's less than 2 weeks away.

So yeah, it seems like we cant do both

The spring game isn’t fun to watch for a casual fan and it’s usually not too useful for determining how the team will be in the fall. I’m not really sure why anyone who isn’t already a big Rice football fan would go... Previously it’s been marketed as a family fun day and not really about the football. Most people don’t want to watch a college football practice, especially a Rice one.
