The free ticket would not do me much good since I already have a season ticket. I hope the Tshirt would be in my size.

If so, it's unintentionally (?) giving us some insight into how the athletic department sees Rice fans...

RE: Mark in the Park
Looking at the lettermen's list in baseball, other Marks in Rice baseball history include Marcus Clark (1975), Mark Farrar (1981-82), Mark Haynes (2008-10), Mark Luetge (1980-81), Mark Machalec (1981-84), Marcus Nalepa (1991-92), Marcus Ramos (2002), Mark Rooker (1971-74) and Mark Taylor (1993-96) (in addition to Quinn and Gwyn I mentioned earlier). So I guess we have enough Marks to field a team but they would probably get beat by a lot of other Rice baseball name teams (the all-Matt and all-Mike teams would kill the all-Mark team).

Not spectacularly screwing up the contract situation. I know it sounds salty but anything we do at this point short of winning out is rearranging titanic deck chairs and that includes promos like this.

I'd rather the department pivot and focus on actually marketing the Spring game (which we just found out about confirmed) etc.

We have finite resources and we need to allocate it to the best long term (or even short term) revenue projection. Mark in the park may get a few but a well marketed spring game that's actually promoted may long term see several hundred or more in the stands next season.

You think that the marketing department’s resources are so minimal they can’t both market the Spring Game and come up with Minor League style promotions? And connecting this back to our contract situation is a bit of a stretch - if JK is micromanaging the marketing department so much that this keeps him from focusing on big ticket objectives, we have a problem.

Have you seen any spring game marketing? I haven't- and it's less than 2 weeks away.

So yeah, it seems like we cant do both

The spring game isn’t fun to watch for a casual fan and it’s usually not too useful for determining how the team will be in the fall. I’m not really sure why anyone who isn’t already a big Rice football fan would go... Previously it’s been marketed as a family fun day and not really about the football. Most people don’t want to watch a college football practice, especially a Rice one.

I agree but given how the mens sports seasons have gone, we have no casual fans left and very few die hards in regular attendance too. Stadiums are ghost towns.

So why not try to market it as a family fun event and also a way to re engage the former fans?

I just dont understand why we aren't marketing it at all? We just found out what the date and time was yesterday.

I agree that it’s strange we aren’t marketing it, but I doubt it isn’t because we developed “Mark in the Park.”

Possibly. But the broader point is that we are not doing what we should be doing. And we need to rectify that before doing other marketing things.

Mark in the Park is like the monogrammed towel answer by Greenspan. Not inherently a incorrect response but while Rome burns, picking new towels may not be the best option

The football team isn't a winning program yet either, so why is marketing a meaningless scrimmage that has zero fan interest a good use of funds while marketing a baseball game is a waste of time?

I'm tired of all the haters here. Mark is a wonderful name, and we deserve to be honored. Kudos to the MARKeting team at Rice. Maybe for one day only, we can get the founders name changed to William Mark Rice.

Yes we are all haters. Our hate is why the status quo is so tolerated here

Of course, let's blame the "haters"

It isn't anything to do with winning. it is ROI and potential fan interest. Rice needs to first win back the fans it chased off in the last few years with the trainwreck in FB. And for better or worse, there are a lot more of those than any of the other sports.

How many people do you really think Mark in the Park will bring?

FTR, I am not saying that doing Mark in the Park is inherently bad. Just that this cannot be the only thing going on especially when other things such as the spring game etc. don't even have published and easily available date/times.

I went there for kids get in free day for last game of Gonzaga series. There were probably 30-40 kids total? So it brought in 20-30 paying customers between all of the parents? I did spend about $80 on concessions after spending $15 on admission & parking, so I am guessing they did okay from me at least.

I'm guessing there are less Marks enthused about going to a game rather than saving a few bucks on children's admission, so I will put the o/u at 12.5 extra participants.

Date and time have been published online for at least a day now. Do you follow any Rice Athletics accounts on social media? I've seen this on both Facebook and Twitter.

I saw that. My point is posting it one day ago or 10 days before the game is generally poor marketing. Why wait so long?

Ordered my (free) ticket yesterday. I doubt my family will want to go but I'll ask them. They might be too embarrassed to watch me run the bases after the game but maybe they need a laugh. The less of us, the better chance I have of winning all the Mark giveaways! I may balk at wearing a name tag though - that really reeks of social profiling.
