Meh.... even when the football is medium okra, the tailgating atmosphere is other-worldly compared to basketball.
We don't need no stinkin Football to tailgate. We used to have a group that tailgated for Hockey back when the Thunder played in the Big Brown Barn.

RE: Question for my Shocker Friends....
Shocker basketball has large traunches of fans that grew up watching the nationally prominent teams of the 60's, 80's and 2000's. We have a strong following locally and on the road. Football is another animal altogether. The Shockers have no success history whatsoever so there's almost no emotional attachment, other than the memories of the plane crash. I just can't imagine what it would take to get 40k - 50k people out to see the Shox play football every weekend.

I think what everyone is hinting at around here is that no matter how good you are in basketball, unless you have a football team you're not ever going to be totally cool.
...kinda like the guy in high school in the leather jacket that gets dropped off by his mom every day

RE: Question for my Shocker Friends....
AAC basketball is nationally-relevant, and moving forward should always be in the hunt for F4's and national championships. The schools' histories are reflective of this standing as well.
AAC football sits at the kiddy table, and will never be lent a seat at the adult table. See the season that just ended less than 90 days ago for support. The P5's are never going to invite you guys to the conversation at the adult table, and the evidence is staring you in the face. Unfortunately, you guys thinking otherwise are sort of like Bruce Willis' character in the Sixth Sense.

RE: Question for my Shocker Friends....
What is funny is that some Xavier fans think that Xavier could easily get Gregg Marshall as their coach:
"Yes, I think that Marshall would leave Wichita St for Xavier if they came calling. Marshall has a track record and a shiny new gig in the AAC, but the AAC isn’t the Big East (or really even close). There’s no reason to stay with Shockers other than loyalty, and Xavier can buy that out if they so choose to give Marshall a raise over the $3 million he makes right now."

The irony is the next one
"Shaka Smart: 200/1
This would have been really exciting four years ago. Smart has gotten Texas turned around to some extent, but he’s not quite the rising star he was. Smart also makes over $3 million per year and has some serious bonuses in his contract. You’ll see this name out there, but X would have to really raise their head coach salary to make this work"
As of next Season Shaka will make 300k less than Marshall .. but they can afford Marshall but not Shaka .... Shaka is on much shakier ground than Marshall also...

Big Pee fans are delusional. I find it funny that Xavier fans (as well as Butler and Creighton fans) talk as if they were always "major" and forget their roots. Our conferences are both "major" conferences at the moment. The only difference is that they have Villanova and their bottom isn't quite as bad, which is why the Big East is ranked a few slots higher. Other than that, I would argue that the top brands in the AAC are better brands than any of the Big East brands not named Villanova or Georgetown. Wichita is certainly no less major than Xavier and Xavier fans seems to forget that they haven't had the mid-major stink off their coats for very long.
Wichita State job > Xavier job

Xavier fans seem to have an unrealistic view of their place in the college basketball pecking order. I wouldn't argue WSU eclipses Xavier on the national scene, but we're damn sure not trailing them.
There's been a lot of funnies over the years for Shocker fans while observing the narratives of other programs who think prying Marshall away from WSU wouldn't be much of a thing, but this Xavier post might take the cake on the irrational.

Absolutely.
From a long-view perspective, the AAC is a buy stock, and the NBE is most definitely a sell stock.
The TV ratings for BE games are atrocious. Easily the worst, by large margin, out of the "Major 7" if that term is a thing. Some might call that a leading indicator - a bad one at that.

I don't think football will go away because of concussions, but I think its popularity will continue to diminish over the next 20-30 years. Football may join horse racing, baseball, and boxing as former most popular sports in the US. And the sport that could take its place, if current trends continue, is the one we have built the athletic department around.
I say we go all in on basketball.
There IS a reward. As a non-football school in the AAC, you will likely receive about 30% of the contract amount full sports schools will receive, and Navy will get about 70% for football only.
Add FB and you get 100%, about 3 times as much.
And if you are waiting for college football to become irrelevant, you will probably have a long wait.
