Being discussed.

I think he will get out of his letter if he wants out.

If he actually signed a NLI, I doubt it. These other coaches are not going to roll over because the other coach has a shoe line.

What if the coach he signed the NLI leaves?

Then he will certainly get a release.

Happens every year. If a player wants out, there's frequently a release given. Could get complicated that it's in conference, but if I had to bet, I'd bet he's released - if he requests it. In the environment today, coaches get roasted for not releasing players. This would be doubly true for a player who has never even been on campus, transferring to play for his mentor. Shoe line has nothing to do with it.

Not about the shoe line but rather the very close relationship Lomax and Penny have. Marshall would rightfully be roasted if he holds Lomax to the NLI, especially since he has not even stepped foot on campus.

Teams will usually give a release but not to conference mates, traditional rivals, or other teams that they play the following year. The reason Nichols blew up in our face was because we tried to block him from going to VIrginia on the pretext that we might play them in a preseason tournament, and that was considered to be outside of the usual conditions.
If Marshall bolts, they may give him an unconditional release. Otherwise Lomax is probably going to have to sit out a year if he wants to come here.

Roasted by whom? The only people who would consider it in bad taste would be us Memphis fans. I'm not sure Marshall cares very much what we think.

Other potential Wichita State recruits will see it......looks bad for Marshall considering the kid never set foot on campus

Just playing devil's advocate here, but if I'm Marshall and this is an issue for other potential recruits (meaning they want to leave open the possibility of asking for their release) then I'm probably not going to recruit them.

That story plays horribly in the media. The media loves sob stories, especially with all of the crap going around the NCAA. It would be a very bad look for Marshall. And besides, what is the end game? Either have a player on your roster who does not want to be there or make him sit a year before transferring? What is the point in standing your ground if the end result is the same (Lomax ends up on Memphis' roster) with the addition of bad press?

What does Marshall gain by not releasing him?

If he asks, I think Marshall releases him...as he should. I'm just saying no one would feel sorry for Lomax or Memphis other than Memphis fans. Everyone on this boards seems to think the media hates Memphis, so I'm sure the national media would somehow find a way to blame Memphis if Lomax isn't granted a release.

I think Marshall releases him too. If a kid doesn't want to be there, it's a distraction.

The media almost universally will side with the kid in a situation like this

If he wants to come here just sit out a year and attend under a HOPE scholarship. Either way he will not be playing college ball next year.
