Compher to get $1.2M buyout, will still earn longevity bonus
Oh great. This is why he is staying until May 1.

Also, The agreement requires Compher to "make reasonable efforts" to get a new job. ECU's payments will be reduced dollar for dollar after he earns $192,500 per year at a new position.
NEW INFO: ECU trustees agree to $1.26 million Compher buyout
Hope he gets at least $445,000/year at his next gig. That would put us in the clear (I think). Let's help him find a new job. When I get home I'm changing my signature image to "Hire Compher."

That is bizarre.

Half the price of firing him without cause, and cheaper than leaving him at the helm while donations fall off.

I agree. Just some strange terms.

RE: Confirmed: Compher Out at ECU
Okay, just got my signature changed to "Hire Compher." Gotta get his income well over $400k to really help out ECU. Wonder what a double shift at the Dairy Whip pays? I'm also worried about all those people stuck with cases of "Fire Compher" t-shirts.

ok, I have to step in here....

There is NOTHING that happens at ECU that warrants a thread with this many posts.

Time to wrap this up.

So the buyout discussion was initiated and requested by Compher, not the ECU administration. Ugh, I was hoping that we were getting smarter, but instead it looks like Compher played us again. Time for Staton and the BOT to go as well. And make sure you take Mo with you.

Graybeard, graybeard!!

Is there any truth to the supposed hacked e-mails that show you're really an UNCheat fan in disguise?

Do you believe the Russians have become involved in the elections?

That's the "official" story. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in what they are saying publicly, but I do agree that it's time for Staton and most of the BOT to go.

Timeline people, timeline. Walter Williams passes away, next day rumors about Compher leaving, day after that a buyout it magically in place.

When asked last week if they regretted giving Compher a 5 year extension last year, Chancellor Beth Merkleson avoided answering the question:
All of you that follow the world of athletics know that this is something that happens, so yeah, there are disappointments that come with these kinds of things, a sadness as well. Jeff is an honorable person, he and Cathy have served Pirate Nation admirably and they’ve done so many things since they’ve arrived here and before I did, so I’m very appreciative of their service.

ECU board of trustees chairman/UNC lawyer Kieran Shanahan responded:
Jeff Compher is one of the highest-regarded athletic directors in the country. Every metric at the time we made that decision, it was the right decision...Let me add that unfortunately a very few people, who claim to be Pirates, have taken to social media in a very negative way. And those things hurt to undermine our university, especially when they are based on falsehoods, half-truths and fake news, as we now call it...We stand behind the decision we made with the extension.

Sounds like Beth and Karen were wagering double or nothing on Compher, hoping for a lucky break. Time for the sharks to collect on the debt.

This is as good a place as any. It looks like we might be going with Dave Hart, at least in an interim capacity, for AD.

A little history:
AD - ECU - 1987-1995
AD - Florida State - 1996-2008
ED of Athletics - Alabama - 2008-2010
AD - Tennessee - 2011-2017 (retired June 2017)

Fun Fact: Contract at FSU wasn't renewed after academic scandal involving football players. In short, this guy knows what it takes to win!

Wow, 3 generations of ADs. The OG was the AD at Louisville, Missouri, and was the SoCon commissioner for a bit. (Not the good SoCon. The App State, Marshall, Chattanooga SoCon)

Jeff Compher has never created success as an AD, he has continually FOLLOWED success. He's a joke.

You're right, Beth Merkleson and Kieran Shanahan are doubling down, hoping if they lie to everybody enough that Pirate fans will believe them. They need to be shown the door very soon.

The football program operated separately there as a fiefdom of first the cheating Bowden and then the ahole Fisher. It's FSU after all.

How much does Montgomery make/how much could ecu realistically shell out? I know

Doubtful. As much as I am disappointed in Montgomery's performance to date, he needs to be reassured that his job is safe for at least the upcoming year. He guaranteed a bowl game - if he delivers he earns another year, otherwise I'll consider his guarantee a conditional resignation.

The Lebo resignation helped a lot with ecu's whole situation. Compher taking a lessor buy out does too, especially about the salary over 200,000 or what ever. Two situations that were needing correction just got done on the cheap. There will be a lot of focus and scrutinizing of the football program now as the attention of the other issues will be firmly on Montgomery. I would not be surprised to see more money to be found suddenly if Montgomery needs to be bought out.

ECU has handled things nicely, got the things it needs to done and conserved resources while doing it. The athletic department went from Dire Straits to Ohio Players things are a little funky still but smooth.
