Extend him. Make it for base with incentives if he reaches goals. Buy out decreases yearly. The incentives get progressively harder to achieve. So first year NCAA berth. Second year top win game in NCAA, third year top 50 RPI NCAA win, top 3 in conference.

The incentives match the expectations and can be spun as a raise, the 3 years gives him security, and the buy out decreasing let's TU get out early if they have to bail.

He's been about par so far since the 9 seniors. The classes have evened out so the dirty work is done at least. We've shown progress but it's NCAA next year he will be on his way out.

Well, he hasn't Ollie'd Tulsa, so he has that going for him.

I agree with CB that recruiting can suffer if a coach doesn't have the appearance of full support from the administration. He needs to be the coach until the exact day he isn't.

He surprised me with a 4th place finish in the conference. Give him a little more time to show what else he can do. Rework the contract, extend it, lower the buyout. If Tulsa isn't dancing next year there are a ton of great non M7 coaches out there you can pick up.

What is his year-by-year record at Tulsa?

Do recruits really say..."hey, what are the terms of your contract?"

How's your retirement plan?

They are most interested in the 401K.

They don't care about specific terms. They do care about whether or not he is only under contract for one more year. That's just common sense. The other schools' recruiters will make the kid care about it.

The kids don't ask those questions. But the parents do.

No, the coach that's recruiting against Haith uses it with great effect. No recruit is going to play for a coach whose job is in jeopardy. If Haith isn't operating under a minimum of a 3 year contract (4 is better), you may as well fire him now as you have ZERO chance of improving your program with him at the helm.

It's hard enough to turn a program around with the full backing of the athletic department. Extending the years of the contract on a coach that's starting to lose the support of the administration is a cost of doing business. If your coach doesn't have a hefty remaining contract value when fired, you likely wasted a lot of time allowing him to run it out till the end. Many schools have to do it though as they are cash strapped.

They do ask how recently the coach has been mentioned in a rap video though.

I realize that Tulsa fans have expectations of occasional tourney appearances, as they should. As far as I'm concerned, if Haith can keep Tulsa in the 75-125 RPI range, keep him. That's certainly helpful to the conference.

They need to be Top 75 .... Q1 Road win and at least in the conversation of an At-large with the right wins.

2014-2015: 23-11 NIT second round
2015-2016: 20-12 NCAA loss first four (9 seniors)
2016-2017: 15-17 no post season
2017-2018: 19-12 no post season

The classes have mostly been evened out from losing the 9 seniors. We expected NIT this year, we lost an Aussie center in mid-september to go home and turn pro.

So mostly what we have expected or just under. He deserves next year, which means we need to extend to cover him to be able to recruit.

Anything less than the NCAA (barring a rash of injuries or other craziness) next year and he will be done. Getting the classes more balanced was important and at least sets the table for the next coach if Haith doesn't make it.

The answer depends on the answer to another question. Do you have confidence that Haith is going to lead Tulsa to where they want to go? If yes, then extend. If no, then don't.

I would put it this way...As of right now I think there's a 45% chance he can get us to the level we want to be at. So I'm not opposed to a short extension, but I don't want a long one.

50-75 is what we expect in down years. NCAA/NIT is a minimum.

In a 10 year period I would expect 7-8 berths, a sweet sixteen run or two, one of those to be a team capable of going further. A .500 tournament record. NIT runs the years we aren't NCAA.

So far (although this year was a little short) it seems he has the floor we want. The question is can he get us to our ceiling? I think he should have another year, which means some sort of extension for recruiting. Nothing serious though. If he gets us where we want to be next year we can always sweeten the deal and should to maintain the good relationship.

I find the class balance argument funny since it looks like he will be creating a 6 man class in the near future with all his JUCO recruits. That's almost exactly the number of significantly contributing players we lost when Haith was in his second year. It looks like he's making the same problem again.

Do we really think that other coaches saying "he may not byour coach during your entire career" is a more detrimental argument than "he won't take you to the tournament"? I would think an opposing recruiter would do better at letting the recruit know Haith's track record than his contract status.
