RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
Do you not know the size or more importantly, the uniqueness of their fanbase and how well/unconditionally funded they are because of that?

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
Doesn't mean that the MWC is going to add them back. If you have Gonzaga, how much is BYU really worth to the MWC? Who cares how their funded? They've won 3 Tournament games in the last 25 years and just got mauled by 30 last night.

What kind of ratings does BYU basketball get? Compared to other MWC or WCC teams?

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
If Gonzaga was to leave the WCC would it help or hurt BYU?

The conference wouldnt be as good but BYU could pull a NMSU and win the autobid every year.

If BYU is probably going to be B12 in another 5-10 years it may not be worth switching leagues for.

If no TPC (P5 to the masses) is available then I say they end up in the Valley should Gonzaga leave.

The Valley isn't really anywhere anymore so I doubt that.

RE: Gonzaga and the MWC have talked?
Here is another thought on MWC expansion; maybe the MWC really sees a lot in Rice and would like to work them into the conference somehow.

1) Houston market. It's large. That cannot be denied.
2) Rice's academics. They more than make the cut for any FBS conference.

Third is Rice's perception might help the MWC if down the road a decision will be made to expand the NY6 to an NY8 and some more autobids are handed out. Also long term in the even there is a P5 split where they take in the BE and AAC. It might give the MWC more leverage when the noah's ark appears.

There could be something strategic about Rice for the MWC.

It could be to 14 with Gonzaga, Rice and.....UTEP?

UTEP I think makes the cut because of its deep basketball tradition. Having the Sun Bowl is nice too.

This would allow Boise State to move west in football which I am sure they want. They can be travel partners with Gonzaga saving them $$$.

The Sun Bowl doesn't come with UTEP. Ask CUSA. The WAC got it when UTEP was a member only when the big 10 or PAC couldn't fill it. Like in 1998 when TCU spanked USC.

I meant as a home stadium.

You never know though if the P5 moves into markets like Chicago, Boston, LA for games the Sun may slide down to the G5.

Since you have to explain what TPC or R5 or whatever refers to every time, you might as well just use P5.

It's better than the WCC with them in the Valley and Gonzaga gone. The Valley has had every member compete for at-large spots the last 12 years, the WCC just 3.

Yeah - UNLV, SDSU, and UNM are all dying to play in front of less than 10k in humid Houston for football and less than 1k in basketball!!!!!

Which is why Houston and New Mexico State used to be Valley members, right? And that was decades ago, think of things now days and proposed coast-to-coast conferences and conferences that spread from New England to Texas and across numerous time zones.

BYU would bring a lot to any conference and I mean any conference, even the SEC and B1G. The biggest hold up is the baggage that comes with them. The Valley would be thrilled to add them if necessary.

It's why I say Rice needs to make a choice. Fully embrace their academic profile and join some peers or enhance their overall profile with competent D-I athletics.

They have one of the smallest enrollments in FBS and play in a large pro sports dominated city. Nobody cares about Rice.

I don't concede their power.

That doesn't change that they have the most power and are pretty much exclusively referred to in a collective manner as the P5.

If you deny the reality, then maybe you could consider it an orphaned initialism, like ECHL. 03-wink

I usually fully type out traditional power conferences but occasionally don't feel like typing it.
