Trump Placed Tariffs On Chinese Solar Panels, China To Build Solar Plant In U.S.
Isn’t Obama’s Solyndra boondoggle. How great is it to have a real leader these days.
Quote:Just one week after the Trump administration announced a massive 30% tariff on imported solar panels, one of China’s largest solar panel manufacturers announced plans to open a manufacturing plant in the United States.
The company, JinkoSolar, said on Monday that they have received the green light from their board of directors to “finalize planning for the construction of an advanced solar manufacturing facility in the U.S.” CNN Money reports:
The statement suggested Jinko’s decision was tied to the new tariffs, saying that the company “continues to closely monitor treatment of imports of solar cells and modules under the U.S. trade laws.”
“This deal will further solidify our leadership in the U.S. market,” said Nigel Cockroft, general manager of Jinko U.S. “An agreement of this magnitude exemplifies JinkoSolar’s commitment to provide our clients with the most reliable products and dependable, regional customer service.”
Regarding the huge hike in import tariffs, Trump said last week:
When we do this, a lot of manufacturers will be coming to the United States to build washing machines and also solar. For both solar and washing machines, these executive actions uphold the principle of fair trade and demonstrate to the world that the United States will not be taken advantage of anymore. Our companies will not be taken advantage of anymore.

Same thing happened with the washers and the driers. He put a tariff on those, and LG came out and said that while prices were going up, they would come back down because they were about to open their american plant in TN, and appliances made there would not be subject to the tariff.
So, instead of a trade war, we've got foreign businesses spinning up manufacturing plants here in the US.

What was it he said, whatever it costs to export we're going to charge to import or something to that effect.

No this is the smoking gun. Trump is now in bed with the Chinese. Russia gave them the blackmail tapes. Our country is being run by commies.

Before some idiot gets on here and talks about prices will go up.....
did anyone see a price decrease on GE appliances when they shutdown most of their American lines and moved them out of the U.S.? Nope...did not happen.
Same thing when China flooded us with cheap steel...building cost did not go down. Americans lost jobs, good paying jobs. A steel company in my area is waiting on the President to impose Tariffs On Chinese steel. Once they do with in 60 days they will open one of the lines they had to close. That's 100,jobs at $60,000 a year. With in the first year they will open 2 other lines

It's not the optimal solution (that would be us building and exporting) but it's sure better than straight imports.

when I had to design around that era, it got to point of, "hey dipshites, tack on a surcharge.....I can't pull more mat'l out unless you enjoy fail and subsequent lawsuits"
in a niche custom mfg facility, it didn't cost jobs....it simply allowed JCI to buy out YRK.....
the chinese building empty cities is akin to the internet boon, destructive housing lending, and tulip mania..................somebody is going to take up the arse......
in our case, we allowed the chinks to purchase 10% of our debt.......it was by design from a shiteload of NY fockbags.....
the lay person doesn't have a goddammmed fk'n clue......

Count me as not particularly thrilled that this expensive and inefficient technology is going to be pushed ahead further and at the taxpayers expense.

Im not so sure.
Im staring at a 20 acre field full of inefficient solar panels right now out my office window. Only the land owner, maker of the panels and the installers come out winners. Us as taxpayers get shafted having to pay for these monstrosities called Solar Farms. If it can be done without subsidies? Im fine with it. Otherwise?.... To Hell with it until it becomes viable to stand on its own competitively.

I'm cool with funding this tech moving forward.....however, I'm not cool with the 'who'....
it didn't have to happen this way......but now it is such.....
it was all by design to increase debt and globalize the USD.......the consequence is the debt and being able to lasso it.....
that's #henceDJT's challenge.....

Linette Lopez from Business Insider Wrote:Now that the Trump administration is talking about a steel tariff of up to 25%, it's time to talk about what happened the last time the US tried one.
It all went down not so long ago — 2002, under the supposedly free-market-friendly Bush administration. The 30% tariff was gone by 2003, lasting about 20 months.
Why? Because the US got beaten like it stole something.
Quote:When all was said and done, the Institute for International Economics (IIE) estimated that as many as 26,000 jobs were lost in steel-using industries (like the auto industry, for example).

Would there even BE a solar market if not for subsidies? I'm really frustrated with all the monkeying around here. First we subsidize demand like crazy, and now with these tariffs we'll end up restricting supply. Yes, I realize the Chinese have been dumping their panels but let's face it: If they want to tax their citizens to supply us with cheap panels, we're going to have some winners here on the consumer side.

We've needed a level of "protectionism," even though I don't think that is an accurate term, for a long time.
I'm happy to see Trump address this. I hope that he gets far more aggressive.

I used to have this same argument with DrTorch regarding alternative fuels. You both seem to think that there will never be any sort of technological advancement in these areas so that we should just abandon it now. Naturally, I think that's the wrong approach.

I think there is a middle point in those two positions that the technology should be free to develop but that it doesn't warrant government favoritism.
I don't have anything against solar panels but I don't think that I should be compelled to support a competing industry simply because of another group's political stance.

Not even a genius. This kind of stuff is just basic common sense. For years, inexplicably, we have looked on with disinterest as our manufacturing base moved overseas. Manufacturing jobs are the kind of blue collar jobs that allowed high school grads to enter the bottom rungs of the middle class. Those are the jobs that have a powerful ripple effect through the economy (they have far more impact than service sector jobs). I find it amazing we had little to no objection to letting them slip away.
