This isn't quite what I was saying but the map tells the story. They can go in any direction and it would have continuity. We don't have that ability. It's been said before but if we picked an area to build ODU today. The current site would not even be considered. We'd be in Chesapeake, VB or Suffolk.

Though, between the art museum, the new dorm, the child study center, the stadium project, the recent completion of the cafeteria, practice facility and the education building, they're building quite a bit. So it's not as bleak as some on here would have you believe.

I've always thought the area where all the VB government offices are (North Landing and Princess Anne) would be a perfect spot. It already looks more like a college campus than ours:/

Today is the day we are supposed to hear something from ODU on the new stadium, updated renderings is what I have heard. Sorry in advance if I get your hopes up and they are crushed again by ODU.

Will this be in the form of an article from Harry or a formal statement from ODU officials?

From what I got from an ODU source it should be from ODU. But who really knows

I still cant figure out why they are not building vertically to save space and doing more multipurpose buildings. For example, the new dorm could have been built on top of the new dining hall. The new end zone of the stadium should be the back of a new administration building.

Regarding expansion... I understand why ODU has a difficult time acquiring land, as it's surrounded by private residential areas on three sides, whereas VCU was surrounded by burnt out and abandoned retail on three sides. Its easier to buy up empty retail and burnt out abandoned buildings. The Richmond area also seems to want to see VCU thrive and has embraced it, recognizing its importance to the area, while Hampton Roads continues to be largely indifferent or in some cases even works against ODU. I think the best thing the City of Norfolk could do is encourage the industrial stuff next to campus to relocate to other industrial parks if possible and allow ODU to expand there. They should also encourage the development of the area from the village to Colley Ave where the Wave, Dirty Buffalo, Macks Barge etc are to become a "downtown ODU" or university district with privately owned shops, bars, restaurants and primarily private student housing. Lastly Lamberts Point and Colonial Place should be given incentives to improve their properties and the city should commit to policing them more strongly so faculty and staff will desire to live in those locations. Beautification and safety would go a long way in that regard. And if Im dreaming, one day EVMS and ODU merge, making Colley Ave and Hampton Blvd from campus to the hospital "ODU central" with the whole area of Ghent enthusiastically embracing the school in the same way Charlottesville does UVA or Blacksburg does VT, maybe I'll live to see that day... but its a long shot.

If it wasn't for MCV/VCU/occasional politicians and a few big banks nobody would go to downtown Richmond, so yes the area is in favor of VCU taking over downtown Richmond.

But the issue that VCU will always face is that they dont have a continuous campus. They will always be mixed in with the crappy buildings of Richmond that they cant buy. If they want a building/land and cant get it, they just move over one more block and get that building or lot. ODU is trying to create a continuous campus which is much harder to do than what VCU is doing

Vision. Then, I look at my university, and think hmmm. How can we seem to screw up again and again on everything we touch and do? From athletic coaching hires, to game day atmospheres, to capital expenditures for a football stadium, on and on. There is such a lack of vision, it is really really sad. I just don't see why ODU Admin can't figure things out. When President Runte was there, she knew how to get things done and had a vision on what ODU should be. Since she left, I think we have lost our way.... Wow, I miss her. Her vision, her high energy, her hard work....
I know money talks, but leadership doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Just a clear vision and hard work.
Okay, I will get off my soapbox....
I'm sorry, Leadership doesn't cost alot of money? WTH does that even mean? Money is the over riding difference between VPI and ODU. They have it, we don't. I don't know what their new media rights deal is, with the ACC channel and all. I'm guessing over 30 million dollars a year (per school). Yeah, but if we only had the right leadership. We'd be knocking them outta the park.

They are trying to build "Up" as much as possible, but in some instances the soil is not suitable.

Yes, I agree, they have tremendous more resources than ODU. However, my point was, leaders don't always make a lot of money. Their salaries can be very reasonable. I don't remember President Runte making a huge amount of money, but she was, in my opinion, a great leader. Leaders work hard and have vision. They often find ways to make things happen, with or without tremendous funds. So, yes, VT has a lot more money, but this doesn't mean we can't have great leadership....

A presentation to decision makers is necessary before releasing to the public.

If we can't hit a date for releasing a design plan it doesn't instill a lot of confidence about the ability to hit an opening date in time for the 2019 season.
