Interesting take from Alabama fans on our game
https://www.tidefans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=294585

and compare it to the Minnesota fan base's view on the Bison-Dukes.
http://www.forums.gopherhole.com/boards/...ost1501111

One viewpoint from fans that recognize excellence and know what it means to be a champion. The other...well-let's just say they haven't done squat in the last 55 years and they know it. All they can cling to is their P5 pedigree. Deep down, even they know they are not P5 material.

Interesting to skim those threads. You're right that the Tide fans "recognize excellence" whereas the Minnesota fans are just salty because their team hasn't done anything at the FBS level as of late. Interesting to note that NDSU has played Minnesota 3 times and is 0-3, but the scores were 10-9 (2006 - first year NDSU played FBS competition); 27-21 (2007); and 37-24 (2011). My guess is if NDSU was given a shot at the Gophers next year they'd beat them.

NDSU won the 2007 and 2011 games. They're 2-1 all time vs Minnesota and their one loss was by a point.

Shoot, you're right, completely misread that (after lunch haze I suppose). So that would explain why the Gopher fans are even more salty!

Crazy that since 2006 when they started playing FBS teams they have lost by a total of 21 points in three games, the largest margin was 17 against Iowa State in 2009!

NDSU makes a habit out of beating P5 opponents. JMU needs to start our own habit in our next game.

NDSU has risen to the occasion for quite a while now...beating Iowa and K-St, FCS titles, etc. Last year's loss to JMU was a tough one to swallow. Don't know if it was easier or harder that we clearly were not the better team last year. We have been very spoiled for the last 7 years.

FWIW, the quality of the P5 in our region is much higher than that in their upper midwest region. We're typically drawing better FBS teams.

This quote from the Alabama board is appreciated but hurts a little.

This is a great game - these two FCS teams would challenge a lot of FBS schools...

The problem is that the gap between NDSU, JMU and a few others is wide. We spend fbs money, I don't know what NDSU spends but as a Bison fan said on the boards recently, "I hope this becomes annual"... What about the other 10 games a season against the likes of Norfolk State and Central Conn State, 65-0 and 80-0?

Great see other sports fans perspective

I like this one:

"This is a fantastic game, but I'm so glad neither of these are 'my team' - this would be excruciating to watch as a fan! hahaha "

I read that, and my thought was "Yep, it was".
I would say probably Top 5 for me.
Side note: I'm also a Carolina Panthers fan, so this weekend was absolutely miserable. Probably my worst sports weekend ever. I've had multiple teams lose in a weekend, but I can't remember two of them being knocked out for the season on the same weekend. Dealing with the Carolina loss was nothing compared to Dukes loss, but it was the cherry on top.

RE: Interesting take from Alabama fans on our game
Im not worried about the way Alabama fans think of JMU. I'm more worried about changing the perception of NDSU fans.

As nice a fan base as they are. And I am not wavering on that - these are fabulous people - there is a degree of arrogance that I am having a problem with.

They view Frisco as the NDSU invitational. Perhaps understandably. They've now won 6 of 7. I heard in the red lot and have since read stuff like, "You guys gave us your best shot", "Nobody else has challenged us like you did", " You guys were a worthy opponent". Etc. You dont say stuff like that when you feel you are an equal.

While nice people - NDSU is the bully on the playground and your lunch money belongs to them. Hand it over.

Not so fast, my friend.

Cant wait to get another shot and start the talk about winning 2 out of 3.

If JMU won 6 titles in 7 years and beat 6 straight FBS and 9 of the last 12 FBS they played, our heads would be massive on this message board. Don't kid yourself.

+1

The times they be a changin'...JMU FB is not going away, and NDSU knows they were very fortunate to win.

RE: Interesting take from Alabama fans on our game
That was NOT our best shot. That goes to show you how little they knew about us.
I understand their arrogance. When you win 6 out of 7 titles in a row, as a fan you have to feel somewhat invincible. Not saying it's right, just that I understand. We need to beat them again before they look at us differently.
If there's something I learned this year, it's that when they are not on top, they are insufferable. They need some humbling, and fast.
The thing about an era.... there's always an ending.

And this may not be the best thread for this, but we need to start buying Frisco tickets early this year.

I have not read anyone say JMU wins 2 out of 3 games against this NDSU team. That was my thinking after the game.
How many interference with the punter penalties did we make this year? Was it none prior to this game?
What game(s) did we drop as many easy catches?
Easily JMU gets 10 more points if some of these don't occur. It wasn't NDSU that interfered or dropped balls.

In addition, those dropped balls had little to nothing to do with any pressure on our QB. We simply had hard hands that needed warming up.

I think I can respond to this...some you may like, some you may not...but I'll be honest...for what that is worth.

1. Many of those comments were made to say that there was a lot of respect. We were challenged, and you were worthy. We've played a fair number of teams in the playoffs and championships that were not worthy. Generally we have to play a conference team to find a worthy opponent. Our easiest games tend to be in the playoffs. You might see the same...conference foes know you...can play better than they actually are, etc. This isn't a game where if we played again the next day, we would feel any better about our chances. Two years in a row the Dukes have been on top of the FCS. This is not lost on Bison fans.

2. The NDSU invitational. Yeah, I would think our fans feel that way...and being there 6 out of 7 years...I think that is justified. Even in the one year we weren't there, we made the semis and lost to the champ. The FCS has very few premiere teams. This year there were three teams with a chance...you guys had to go through two of them (SDSU...they normally aren't a 10 turnover team). I know this will end for the Bison...and when it does it will be awful for us...but for now the road to Frisco goes through NDSU. Is it arrogant if it is true? Maybe it is arrogant to say even if true. I wouldn't normally say it in a post...but just discussing your post.

Now, as for 2 out of 3...not so fast my friend. We already have that. You can't discount a game just because you don't want to include it. Sure...different coaches...but still the same team.

Through our run, the fans of every team we've played have told us they were the team that would beat us, that we couldn't handle their speed, receivers, running back, qb, etc. This year was no different. There were very few JMU fans that weren't openly sure they would win. After last years game and then destroying SDSU, JMU fans thought they had it. Arrogant? NDSU fans sure thought so.

So when we hand out compliments...it is to say that we acknowledge JMU backed up the talk. They were every bit the team you thought they were. If only one play goes different, the outcome could be different. But when the chips are down, the Bison have found a way to win for a quite a few years now. So yeah, we might just be the FCS bully on the playground. Now give me your lunch money. :)

RE: Interesting take from Alabama fans on our game
yes, we were openly sure we were going to win and with good reason. We hadn't lost in 26 games. and frankly, most of us feel we SHOULD have won that game last weekend as well. We made some very, very uncharacteristic unforced mistakes.

heck, I even saw a fair number of NDSU fans saying the same thing. That you guys were very fortunate to win.

I think the amount of JMU fans paying compliments towards NDSU FAR outweighs the reverse though.

Let's not forget, before your run, we DID win a title (2004) and arguably should have played for another (2008 - ranked #1 all year, lost in the semis). It isn't like we just came to the party here. and that was back when there were a lot more "JMU/NDSU/Montana" supported level programs.....UMass, Ga Southern, App St, Texas St, etc

RE: Interesting take from Alabama fans on our game
Funny stuff, Minnesota with NDSU reminds me of VT with JMU. Gotta arrogantly rail on the fact that you play at a higher level even though you’re irrelevant at your level 03-lmfao Get in your smack talk where you can, certainly can’t talk any to the real P5 powers.

On the NDSU fans though, I can’t really blame them for the “Nobody has challenged us like you guys did” and all that. You can’t really expect them to go “wow you guys had a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes and even dropped a game winning pass, glad we won but you guys are probably the better team!” like how a lot of us feel. Saying we’ve been their biggest challenge is the friendly alternative to throwing the loss in our faces.

JMad03 is definitely right that they’re insufferable when they aren’t on top though. Hopefully we’re good enough again next year to get them back to crying about streamers and pointing out that they’ve still won six of eight.

Nick Saban's post game comment after beating Georgia Monday night:

"Sometimes you win the game but you don't necessarily beat the other team. I think that we won the game last night because of our resilience, because of our belief in the system, trust and respect for each other, and just really being sort of resilient to whatever happened in the game and being pretty relentless in terms of the competitive spirit that our players played with."

He probably watched Saturday's game also.
