Championship Game Attendance
Several times during the game the TV guys said the game attracted a record attendance of slightly over 19k. The game was certainly well attended, but I thought another NDSU game attracted 21k. Perhaps the 21k number is just more NDSU selective memory talk. Can anyone confirm if yesterday’s game really was a record for Frisco?

The attendance of both fan bases showed really well on TV. You could plainly see the NDSU colours and the JMU purple divided in the stadium, and hear the JMU fans chanting and MRDs playing on TV. Any NDSU fan who claimed pregame the stadium would be 70% + full of NDSU people was clearly full of sh*t.

My eyeball estimation was ~40-45% JMU fans.

I agree. My pregame guesstimate was a 58-42% split, but JMU might have pushed 45%. JMU showed up well, and JMU fans should continue to buy preseason Frisco tickets.

RE: Championship Game Attendance
Just went back and looked at the seating chart.

Taking into account section sizes and sections each team seemed to have I come up with 60-40 advantage for NDSU.

It appeared both teams owned their sections, but NDSU owned the pre-sale sections.

I was happy with our turnout considering......

Yeah, 40% for sure if not a bit more for JMU.

It was not a record. One of the prior five ndsu years had 21 or 22k. It’s now just a 17k seat facility thanks to their renovations.
Had it been in an appropriate facility, it had the demand to be a record crowd. Record demand, yes. Record crowd, no.

I was in 103, I think row 25. 75% of the row in front of us was empty. Made no sense to me at all.

If they were coming from the east coast it could of been weather related travel difficulties.

By the way - Kudos to the students in the endzone seats. They appeared to be the loudest and most emotional in the stadium. 04-bow

Love the students at these games. They bring the atmosphere.

Thinking about our basketball crowds...I don't think any amount of winning can really translate to the same student energy unless they get a good amount of seats up close & encouraged to get a little crazy. The Convo student seating decisions have had a neutering effect on student engagement with basketball. Yeah, I know it's about Ws & Ls, but kids will change the atmosphere if you make it fun. Just check out Grand Canyon U. Might be better home court advantage than the monster student crowds at San Diego St. & Utah St.

I sincerely hope the admin is reading this and giving serious thought about how to get 3-4K (if not more) students close to the court in the new United Center. And by close, I’m suggesting not just behind the baskets, but along one entire side.

Me too. Not only is it good for the students, but the older folk feed off of their energy making a better atmosphere for all.

I have been to several GCU games and it is one of the best atmospheres in the country.

Wow, never seen them before, impressive. Having been a student during some of the glory years (79-83) I will always remember those Godwin Hall days where the students were so into it. I so wish we could bring that atmosphere back and I think this is one important element to making that happen.

You've got a handful of us who were in Godwin with you and we remember as well. The one thing that stands out is that I never remember sitting, it was like every game was just that important.

The opening of the new Convo is an opportunity to make things right for the students. Many like to complain about the student fees. The students should be given top billing and give them better seats. THAT is how you build a fan base (aside from a winning bball team)... you start (not end) with the students.
Sadly, I don't think that's going to happen as well as I hope. My guess is that they'll get the seating behind the baskets, which will be an improvement over what they have now.
That's just not good enough.

To add: If you simply take the number of MBB season ticket holders we have today and add 25% more due to the effect of selling something new, there is not enough people to purchase those tickets in the lower sections. It will look ridiculous having students only behind the baskets. We have a different set of dynamics than we had when moving out of Godwin over to the Convo. Tickets were easily sold to alumni and other fans back in the fall of 1982 prior to the opening of the Convo. That set the stage of what we have today with the seating. It's very difficult to make a change after the initial opening and the reason we must get this right prior to the first game in the new arena.

RE: Championship Game Attendance
There is a lot of wisdom in this thread. Get the students wrapped around the court in the first 5 or 6 rows. That is how college basketball should be and it is how the best environments are set up.

The initial drawings of the Union Bank & Trust center showed a poorly placed student section on one baseline. It shows how out of touch the administration is and has been with JMU basketball since Lefty was fired. The good thing is they have a chance to fix their major error before it is built. If not, they will get ripped and lose donations that are desperately needed for the program to succeed.

Don’t forget a strategic location for the pep band too. They should have a special perch built to accomodate their needs and it should remain closest to the visiting team bench. This is unique to JMU and many coaches over the years have commented how distracting it is for them and their team.
Home court advantage is priority #1 in the design.

It wasn't even remotely close to record attendance. NDSU/JSU 2 years ago had almost 3k more. I've stated the 21,836 in a # of threads on here, including to you.
