Is the real problem above the coaching level?
I realize Rudd and Bowen inherited Opie. That being said, they kept him 1-2 years too long. Now, we have another terrible hire. Is the real problem higher up than coach and will it not be truly fixed until changes are made on that level?

Just asking for thoughts/ opinions.

I genuinely believed the thinking was to bring in a low risk coach who would stabalize the program after JP. I thought the ceiling was pretty low with Tubby but thought we would at least be in the tournament consistently, transfers would stop and stability would be brought to Memphis. Then after 4 years or so we could both move on and bring in a coach to make us truly competitive. I think the admin was in the same line of thinking. That clearly is not turning out to be the case and this is turning into a complete disaster.

This is my belief, as well. Tubby was brought in to bring moderate success without the risk of violations. He was also a "name" that would excite the fan base. I don't believe there was much research or thought past that. At this point, the looks to be an absolutely horrible decision

He was the easy lazy hire. It backfired.

You don't get any safer hire than Tubby when you think you're in the final stage of being added to the B12.

John Martin tweeted that Tom Bowen will be on the show next week. Maybe they'll take calls.

There will be a real problem above the coaching level if they do not act on Tubby or provide very good reasons for not acting on Tubby if the current trend continues.

It was the opposite of that. It was the result of very smart people overthinking things.

I think at least one of 'them' liked him. Whether is was a genuine consensus of opinions or not, everyone says 'No'.

But how did the contract got so ridiculously one sided...yet again? And what verbal promises were made that weren't written in...?

Maybe there were too many people talking and promising. lol

RE: Is the real problem above the coaching level?
I think at that time and us thinking the Big 12 was imminent this hire made a ton of sense. he was doing well at Texas Tech, still seemed to have something left in the tank and like many said it was a stable good hire that wasn't really lazy because we had to compete with Tex Tech to get him so they clearly thought he was good choice for the time. They did pull off a miracle in getting rid of Josh fairly cheap so hats off for that. I think the issue is Tubby just isn't keeping his end of the deal.

… Goes to show, you don't ever know,
Watch each card you play and play it slow,
Wait until that deal come round,
Don't you let that deal go down, no, no.

This! It would be interesting to know how things would have gone if the B12 actually expanded . . . oh well.

I still think there will be a major shakeup to his staff at the end of the season with at least 2 assistants replaced. Will probably be too little, too late though.

Yeah. Should have been low risk/moderate reward. The ceiling may have been low, but the floor was definitely supposed to be higher and more firm that what we're experiencing.

I've heard this a couple of time about the one-sided contract, but gotten no specifics. What do you mean? Because if you're talking about the lack of a buyout, I think that is more common these days than not. Right or wrong. At least this time, there's the ability to extend the payouts over a longer period.

They were looking for the Anti-Pastner but assumed incorrectly that he would get talent out of Memphis.

I realize everyone is jumping on the Rudd/Bowen bandwagon, but Josh was around too long because he was really well liked for his moral views and "character" by a few huge boosters that pay the bills. Tubby was ultimately hired by these same boosters for many of the same reasons that Josh was kept on too long.

I can agree with this. Josh was a "safe" coach but was in over his head. Tubby is a "safe" coach whom the game has passed by.

OP is a joke.

Pastner needed to go, but no one would have ever fired him two seasons before he left, and pretty much no one would have fired him the season before that.

Do you even remember the situation this admin was in with him before GT bailed us out?
