SWC? There's only one school in there that was in it for more than a few years.

That's why I think he needs Rice to add SWC history, provide a presence in the Houston media market, establish the eastern academic rival for Stanford, and match the rich baseball tradition of the other programs in this proposed conference.

True--but the conference was never really geographically fit the "southwest" moniker. It was really the south central US (and really mostly Texas). The conference he shows actually is "southwestern" in geography.

It is important to remember that all the schools of the old SWC were southwest of almost every major population center in 1914, and certainly west of the Southeastern Conference. Remember the Big 10(+4) was once called the Western Conference.

I like it but where does WVU go? They'd still be a member of the Big 12 and I am guessing this new league will fall under their umbrella. If I had to take a gamble, I'd say if they don't find a home in the ACC or SEC they stay in this new Big 12 and Colorado St gets bumped out. Then again, if the Big 12 is reduced to WVU, ISU, K St, TCU, and Baylor they may take in the Pac 12 refugees but WVU would demand some eastern time zone adds like the Florida twins.

Why would those schools agree to let 3 FCS schools in their new league? Where is ULL?
If you were going to start a Southwestern oriented league I'd do:
NMSU, UTEP, UTSA, Texas St, Rice, UNT
Ark St, LA Tech, ULL, ULM, USM, UAB

RE: Southwest Conference Redo
I'm not advocating for this. Personally, I kind of view C-USA West as the closest thing to a SWC type set-up. But, since this is only hypothetical, if you were to build a new conference in an effort to try and revive the old SWC, you need to stick to a tight footprint that keep or develops regional rivalries, and include as many former SWC members from the G5 as possible. I'd only consider programs in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and the University of Memphis. It could look something like this...
Reformed SWC
Houston (AAC- former SWC member)
Rice (C-USA- former SWC member)
SMU (AAC- former SWC member)
North Texas (C-USA)
UTSA (C-USA)
Memphis (AAC)
LA Tech (C-USA)
Southern Miss (C-USA)
Arkansas State (Sun Belt)
8 of those 9 teams finished bowl eligible this past season. I think that could be a very strong conference with some good regional rivalries.
I can't find a 12 team combination that could work.

NMSU, UTEP, UTSA, Texas St, Rice, UNT

Sam Houston is a perennial FCS power and Mizz St is ready to jump up a division.
ULL is in a new Sun Belt I posted yesterday.
East- FIU, FAU, Ga So, Ga St, Liberty, Chattanooga
West- Troy, UAB, So Miss, ULL, So Alabama, Mid Tenn
New CUSA
North- Buffalo, Army, UMass, Deleware, New Hampshire, Marshall
South- ODU, JMU, Charlotte, App St, Coastal, WKU

If your going to redo the SWC. Then you have to build it based around its history.

2, Kansas
3, Houston
4, New Mexico
5, Oklahoma
6, Oklahoma state
7, TCU
8, Texas

And it would be as irrelevant and uncompetitive on the national stage as the original was in its final days
Until TV stops being the primary source of income for schools, that model is doomed to failure.

Yeah, these guys ain't getting back together. Texas A&M and Arkansas won't leave the SEC to get back with the old SWC group. And, those in the BIG12 won't trade Kansas State, Iowa State, Baylor, and West Virginia for Houston and New Mexico. If there were to be a revised version of the SWC it would have to come from a new configuration within the G5.

LOL... This is not a proposal tv networks are itching for... If I was a big time major tv network my investment would be targeting programs that do reside in big markets rather than invest in those who falsely claim it.
