if the financial markets crash in a similar manner as they did under Bush, then the deficit will more than double.

So you're saying Democrats should work with Republicans to cut wasteful government spending. Excellent! 05-stirthepot

I doubt most people dependent upon Social Security see it as wasteful.

I guess Obama's Presidency didn't do anything to add to it.

if you look at the historical budget data charts provided by the CBO, then you can make that determination for yourself.

So Social Security is 100% of the US Government Spending? What politician considers Social Security wasteful? No politician I know of wants to eliminate that program, BUT something has to be done to ensure it's fully funded long-term.

Once we see the government revenues crater and deficits explode in 2019, there will be a panic and the Cons will begin to clammor again for changes to SS and Medicare.

If you are relying on SS to be solvent and you are under 45 years old you are a moron. You will never see a dime from that bucket. Ponzi scheme to the fullest.

Yeah, I place those predictions up with the polar ice caps that melted away in 2013.

WOW!!! Scary, your lack of understanding about the tax cuts. SS and Medicare revenues are not impacted by the tax cuts. UNLESS you're predicting a 2010 sized recession, revenues to support those programs will be largely unchanged. HOWEVER, the number of those enrolling in those benefit programs will continue to increase so something has to change, either eligibility standards, most likely for those under 40, or revenues.

You mean the crash caused largely by democratic policies in the late 90's? If you really want to discuss this rather that try to play partisan games we could, but I don't think you want to go down that road.

Letting taxpayers keep more of their money is in no way similar to the social justice minded lending policies that eventually led to the 2007 crash.

How many of the failed mortgage banks were backed by Wall Street banks like Lehman Brotgers or Bear Stearns? Funny, our real estate section of the newspaper was littered with ads and rates from fly-by-night lenders no longer in business, but the “community” banks are still here. The idea that the financial crash was caused by democratic policies is false. The crash was caused by Wall Street taking over the secondary markets with little, if any government oversight.

This article in the Atlantic (not necessarily a beacon of right-leaning viewpoints) discusses how I understand the origins of the mortage crisis, THe government was not only overseeing this effort, they encouraged it up to 2007.

It all goes back to the subprime mortgage mess. It was like a snowball rolling down a mountain. Did lack of regulation in the nondepository financial sector contribute? Absolutely, but so did the highly regulated depository sector. Once the subprime mortgage lending began it turned into a shell game to hide the bad loans. Eventually the was nowhere left to hide.
