‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ and Slavery
https://www.snopes.com/2016/08/29/star-s...d-slavery/
There are historians (notably Robin Blackburn, author of The Overthrow of Colonial Slavery, 1776-1848, and Alan Taylor, author of “American Blacks in the War of 1812”), who have indeed read the stanza as glorying in the Americans’ defeat of the Corps of Colonial Marines, one of two units of black slaves recruited between 1808 and 1816 to fight for the British on the promise of gaining their freedom. Like so many of his compatriots, Francis Scott Key, the wealthy American lawyer who wrote “The Star Spangled Banner” in the wake of the Battle of Fort McHenry on 14 September 1814, was a slaveholder who believed blacks to be “a distinct and inferior race of people, which all experience proves to be the greatest evil that afflicts a community.” It goes without saying that Key did not have the enslaved black population of America in mind when he penned the words “land of the free.” It would be logical to assume, as well, that he might have harbored a special resentment toward African Americans who fought against the United States on behalf of the King.

Fit, the point is that the verses used as our anthem are themselves not at all racist... This historical witch hunting to eliminate everything that would today be objectionable is merely causing more divide.
And this is coming from someone who believes confederate statues should come down

Best get the Declaration on trial as well. Jefferson owed slaves while writing it. Adams was the lawyer for the British soldiers at the Boston Massacre, they killed Crispus Atticus, he was black. And Franklin, well he most likely assaulted women, as he was known as a ladies man back then.

I think we won't have unity until all traces of slavery are relegated to the history books and museums.
We cannot have proper tradition when that tradition is tainted by the remembrance of slavery.

Just to be clear. I posted the title from the article as the title of this thread. It's not something I came up with.

Nope, Americans have never been 100% united about anything. A black american can live where there are no traces of slavery, and be 100% on The Democrat Party Plantation. People who are obsessed with slave history get more triggered from this than a confederate statue or the national anthem.

Of course I wasn't talking about 100% unity. We are never going to have that.
Once however the Republican Party embraces the diversity of this country rather than campaign against it, our country will be much better off.

Slavery is a part of American history. You cannot white wash it. You have to acknowledge it for what it unfortunately was. Slavery was not being glorified in this song.

Perhaps we should also do away with all African history (for enslaving each other and profiting off of it), Ottoman Empire history (for invading Europe, kidnapping and enslaving hundreds of thousands of Europeans and mostly children).
My god man. Don't you understand the POINT of history? It's not to just remember good and happy thoughts. History is the story of the past. If you strip Americans of their history, especially those aspects of it that are important faucets of national pride you effectively are working to strip the pride out of Americans. However, that seems to be the mantra of the left. Destroy any semblance of what it means to be "American".

Are we at war with Eastasia or Eurasia? I forget; but whoever it is, those bastards will hopefully pay dearly...........

Did you read the original article? It speculates that the song is in fact glorifying slavery.
My opinion was that if the song does in fact glorify it, it's going to be another instance where people are going to be clamoring to remove it.

The GOP freed the slaves, built HBCUs in the south to educate them. All of the slave owners were democrats, probably including Black slave owners also.
GOP does not recruit based on identity, race, gender, politics. Where black Americans live electing Democrats, most of those hoods suck and are very dangerous. Blacks with good incomes, first thing they do is move into GOP strongholds.

I'm not talking about those Republicans who have been dead for 100 years.
I'm talking about the current Republicans who follow the tactics of Lee Atwater and trot out people like Willie Horton.
