Amtrak Train Derails Near Seattle
Multiple fatalities confirmed. 77 have been taken to the hospital.

2 weeks ago from Lakewood, WA's mayor. Unreal.

Quote:The mayor of Lakewood believes it is just a matter of time before these high speed trains kill someone. He asked the DOT presenters to do better. Mayor Don Anderson said grade separations – such as overpasses – should be included to keep trains away from cars and pedestrians.

“Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements, or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens,” Anderson said.

Sorta. The train did derail off an overpass, and he was pushing for more overpasses.

Just saw this breaking. Before anyone says that's Olympia, not Seattle (Tacoma), they admit to having done it else where in the now deleted blog post.

I'm not saying they are responsible, but it should at least be put in the purview of the investigation.

Quote:An inaugural ride on a new line meant to speed train service in Washington state turned deadly Monday after an Amtrak train carrying more than 80 people derailed outside of Tacoma — causing several train cars to tumble from a highway overpass and killing at least six people, officials said.

At least 42 people were taken to four local hospitals, officials said. Nine people are in serious but stable condition, Madigan Army Medical Center said in a statement. Eleven patients were in fair and stable condition. It's unclear what conditions the others were in.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency after Amtrak train 501 derailed about 7:30 a.m. along Interstate 5 as it was leaving the new Tacoma station. A U.S. official told The Associated Press the death toll is expected to rise and track obstruction is being investigated as a possible cause of the derailment.

Tree stumps have been used to derail trains.

At the bottom of the photo above, you can see the remains of the signal. Its been speculated that the lead engine went off the rails before entering the curve.

Rail buffs perspectives are interesting. Check out their comments here.

Speed kills, we've seen it a number of times in train accidents and it's easiest to assume that speed played a factor as opposed to terrorism.

American "high speed" trains are to trains like Eurostar and Shinkansen as hitchhiking is to space travel.

Initial Plans for the "High Speed Rail" between Dallas and Houston call for Grade Level Crossings in Grimes and Waller Counties.

What could go wrong there? 01-wingedeagle
