I hope WSU loses in the first round to Campbell or some such school.

Worst coach we've ever had --- basketball or football.
You must not have been alive for Moe Iba BB (8, 6 and 6 wins his last 3 seasons) or Larry Porter FB (2-10 and 1-11 his only 2 seasons).
Tubby is worse considering the advantages given him. Top arena in conference and top 10 in the nation, a top level IPF, historically a top 10 fan base, and a top 5 recruiting base in your own backyard with two top 10 recruits currently within 20 miles of the school. Tub is paid a top 15 salary.
Memphis should rarely be outside the top 25 with an average coach. Right now, we are fighting to be in the top 150. The Tub is failing spectacularly.
Totally disagree...as the environment in the humongous FedEx Forum is a terrible basketball atmosphere for most Memphis Tiger games.
The top basketball/arena atmosphere now easily belongs to Wichita State...as those players get play in front of sold out crowds night in and night out...including "bad" non-conf games.
If thousands and thousands of empty seats was a benefit, then usf football would have the best football stadium with their tens of thousands of empty seats at every home game.
He is talking about facilities, not how many people show up b/c the team sucks.
Do you think all those people died? Put a great team back in there, and it fills back up again. Like most places.

It depends on how old you are. I started attending games regularly my senior year of HS when I was accepted to the UofM in 2003. Since then I've seen Memphis play in 9 bowl games with players like DeAngelo Williams, Stephen Gostkowski, and Paxton Lynch.
traveling to the NO Bowl in 2003 was as much fun as watching the Tigers win a Sweet 16 game in 2007 at San Antonio.

RE: Memphis? Basketball or Football?
If there is any sleeper program in this conference in all sports, it is Memphis.
There is an enormous amount of athletic talent in the area and a school that is in a mid-level city that all but has the town to itself, save the Grizzlies. They've shown they will support college basketball with a ravenous fan base and there's no reason to believe the same couldn't be done for college football.
They just have to get it done.

Yeah, I don't think there are many schools in this conference that get as much overall civic support--financial, institutional, and fan interest--as Memphis. Wichita does I'm sure and perhaps UConn, maybe ECU.

Yeah, I don't even understand how he was trying to frame that. We started playing football in 1912. We went to the Burley Bowl in 1956, and the Pasadena Bowl in 1971, so that's 2 bowl games in 59 years. But in all fairness, we didn't play D-1a until 1960, so we didn't have access to traditional bowl games. Then, if you start with the Burley Bowl in 1956, and go to 2003 (New Orleans Bowl), that's 2 bowls in 47 years... Yeah, I don't know what he's driving at.

Another little detail, too. Back in the old days, you had to be in a conference to make a bowl game. We had about a 50-year stretch or so (WWII-1995, minus a 5-year stretch in the MVC)) where we were in a conference in BB, but indy in FB. That sorta made a difference about making bowl games, as well.
And we now have made bowls in something like 9 of the last 15.

I was framing it exactly how I was reading it off Wiki: 2 bowls in nearly 50 years... Why the confusion? I'm certainly not privy to the particulars of why you weren't offered bowls throughout the 20th century, only that you did not enjoy them for almost 5 generations.
Memphis basketball is where your richest tradition lies, make no mistake about it.

As a neutral party, if someone were to ask me what Memphis is known for sports wise, I'd say basketball in a heartbeat.
I have a feeling the general/casual sports fan would agree.
I'm not sure why that's so offensive to the Memphis folk.

B/c the Wiki the rest of us read says 9 bowls (now 11), not 2, and we also know we played 50 years since WWII without a conference in FB, which kept you from going to one.
And I don't think there are many, if any, Memphis fans who think it's offensive to say that Memphis BB has the richer tradition. Duh.

I'm not offended and agree with you. Memphis has been in the national championship game twice in basketball. Football has been an afterthought for years. I'm glad to see that is changing in football. Now if we can just get basketball back on track.
