RE: **** GOP tax reform passes the senate ****
My top priorities were:

1) make the corporate tax rate competitive (20-25%) so we don't bleed jobs.
2) get rid of AMT
3) get rid of phase outs like with itemized taxes (just a hidden higher marginal tax on middle class)
4) raise the floor for the estate tax (its not a priority to totally eliminate it as the House did)
5) Eliminate most of the special breaks on the AMT form

We got 1 and 3. Haven't heard enough to know about 4 and 5 yet.

That's why the bill was passed. "We needed to see what was in it."

If you only get 1 of 3 it would be enough. Just dhad something.

I’m so sick of every piece of legislation having to be perfect for all sides. Means more gridlock and nothing ever happens.

I see people celebrating, but do any of you know any specifics of what they passed? Maybe you are the lemmings you appear to be. When this plan fails, will you blame the Democrats?

Wasn’t the base line for the AMT raised pretty significantly though?

I recall when that was first put in place, snatched up a lot of people, not necessarily “rich”. Then it was raised to a point where it didn’t affect nearly as many people, I think that’s what they’ve done here as well.

No?

Yes, you are. I mean, I keep asking you to dazzle the board with your theory that 10 months = a full calendar year and you either can't, or won't. 07-coffee3

Just pretend that they made a bet to wait until Monday and then decided to welsh on it... I'm sure you'd be more comfortable with that.

In what way can a tax cut fail? Programs objectives fail, taxes are tangible, not programs with objectives.

Still has to pass reconciliation fyi.

The bottom line is that this is a corporate cut. Individual rates aren't going up unless you live in a high tax state and can't deduct that anymore, but for the most part you're seeing slight changes across the board. We desperately need corporate reform, so while imperfect this plan is probably the most I could've hoped for out of the GOP.

No?

It still impacts a lot of people. Basically double income professional couples. For us, we had a lot of one time stock gains two years ago and it didn't impact us (but the Obamacare taxes were nasty). Last year, with none of the one time gains, it basically wiped out the benefit of our only preference item-state and local taxes. That, coupled with the higher standard deduction, are why eliminating state and local tax deductions isn't as big a deal as it is made out to be.

If you are in the top bracket, you have to really have massive preferences for it to make any impact. If you aren't in the top bracket, then that 28% AMT can make a difference.

Tax reform, great economy and booming stock market. That’s why Democrats are flipping out and pulling out things like Mike Flynn to muddy the waters.

They crashed the market? Please explain because I thought loose credit and mortgage bundling fraud crashed the market. I am open to explanation, just don't see how you get to that conclusion. I do recall the tax cuts expiring and losing about $40/paycheck which was very painful to Xers early in their careers and not living with parents.
