Considering the 16 point deficit in the first half, that turned into a nice win against a respectable opponent. Saw some growth from the freshmen and some leadership from Rivers.
Will be interesting to see how they do @UAB.
Much more concerned about the 2018 & 2019 recruiting classes.......

I agree, no doubt...but at least he found a pretty good combination in this one and stuck with it. Really glad to see Nickelberry play well. He's got a chance to be really good, I think.
Agree... Nickelberry with a 3 point shot would be dealt.
But we will probably be in an even worse situation than we were last year any time we face a team with size.
IMO as the season goes on, the best lineup will be Martin, Johnson, Nickelberry, Rivers and Davenport. That’s 6’3, 6’3, 6’6, 6’8 and 6’8. They lack bulk but make up for it with athleticism. I think that lineup can rebound well. The big question will be if they can run some consistent offense.

If someoone can hit some outside shots, the rest of the game will follow. Big if right now.

It was a good game, especially considering how things looked in the first half.

Saw a good game and had a good time. There was a couple who were NKU fans sitting nearby. At the end of the game, the dude ran out holding his head! Guess he was expecting what most on here were expecting. Now, we need to shut that UAB crowd up.

RE: ***Official Memphis vs NKU Game Thread*** (11/25)
I was there (had planned on making the trip to Memphis for this double header for some time). I wasn't looking for that much excitement, but even though they played Kentucky well in last year's tourney I always felt we would win.
I did make the most of the fanbase apathy and upgraded our 6 football tickets to plaza, and we had a great time giving the kids an experience, including high-fiving the players coming off the court.
I love my son's perspective. When we were down big in the first half, he said "This is so awesome, I'm having a great time. I know the game isn't going how we want but it's just great to be here and watch" Preach it kid! That helped me out right then.
I think we all want to see guys settle in together, get their timing right, move more on offense, don't be tentative about getting the ball inside, rebound with 2 hands, and not throw the ball away after we get a turnover from the other team.
I did see in-game improvement on several of those today - hope that part carries over and improves by next game. I think this team can surprise people if they can get on the same page and get their heads right consistently about valuing the ball, being aggressive on offense and intense on d.

Martin's FT shooting is at 75% for the season, but a D1 PG has to knock down those free throws in the last two minutes. We got lucky.

Like Mark G. stated in his CA article, the small unit allowed defensive switching and better ball movement on offense. I believe the freshmen earned more playing time and we will see more small ball in the future depending on match ups.
I suffer no illusions, (e.g., good teams like Cincy would have blown out Northern KY,) but evidence indicates we have the capacity to beat solid mid-majors like Northern KY and it is heartening to me.
Onward to the road against old rival UAB.

I liked the grit this team showed last night. Previous teams might've folded the tent and looked for stats. These guys battled, and it's encouraging. I also think we're finding combinations that click. A work in progress, but some very positive signs.

Stam, I called this lineup didn't I, well 4 out of 5 at least. Tigers' future is bright. Just be patient and enjoy the ride.

That lineup is fine if you play teams like NKU whose three tallest players are 6'5, 6'6, and 6'7.

Drew McDonald is listed at 6'8. They have a 7'0 player who didn't play.
But I understand your point. In fact, the majority of the non-conference opponents scheduled have issues with size.
I only think LSU and Louisville have major contributors above 6'9, which probably means we can play Rivers and Davenport together and not get crushed inside against the mid-majors.
Rivers can't play the three. He needs to come off the bench or get paired with Thornton or Nickelberry.

The freshmen played well against NKU. The encouraging thing is we made some shots from the perimeter in the second half. Who knows if this trend will continue, but it was nice to see that it is possible.
