As I said to a buddy, much like Zelda, it's a solid 8-8.5/10 getting a 1-2 point bump due to the name on the box and everyone's attachment to it. Don't get me wrong, both are great games, but I certainly don't think they belong anywhere near the top of the list for greatest games...hell neither comes close to my Witcher 3 test.

I'm not quite on the 10 bandwagon with the game yet. Then again, I am only 2/3 through the game so far so.... If all the kingdoms so far had been as in-depth as New Donk City I could get there....

I think both are no lower than 9. Not sure on 10s yet but if I had to choose only one to give a 10 it would be Zelda.

Just got through New Donk City and outside of the little stopover level beforehand, that has been the most underwhelming of all the kingdoms IMO. I thought it was going to be the whole city from what you said, but it ended up being maybe 3 square blocks with a few doors to walk into...

Its not a full "city" in that sense IMO. But there is lots to find and do there. Also, once you beat a level, more stuff opens up in the level when you go back to it. Also, after you beat the game you get A LOT more stuff to do in each level and some really cool moon count based unlocks.

I'd say that right now...

Woodland
Toasterina
New Donk
Bowser ( for just having such a bad ass look to it)

Are my T4.

The Moon is cool in its own way and Seaside are both pretty good.

I'm in the low 400s on moons right now.

I don't know...I just feel like everything is being over sold because of the brand of the game. Don't get me wrong, I am really enjoying the game...but I just don't see a 9-10 game here.

It's entertaining, but does not allow you to play the game without motion controls, which is really stupid considering the console itself is handheld, it doesn't look particularly breathtaking...for a Mario game it looks nice, but the worlds don't match up to what Horizon or Assassins Creed LOOK like. I mean, I think Horizon has the best world/map design in gaming IMO from a diversity of landscape, look, and feel, and Mario is nowhere close to that. To best describe it, I think the fact that there hasn't been a kingdom yet that I'm unhappy about leaving or that I really want to go back to says something. I have enjoyed every one of them, but I don't find myself really ever wanting to rehash them once I'm done.

The levels have variety, but they're not too especially large, and the enemies have no variance in how they're defeated; it's always some version of throw hat at enemies and jump on head OR throw hat at other enemy that can jump on the bigger enemy's head.

There is a lot to collect, but how many of these damn moons are just "walk to point and ground pound" or just "jump here...congrats!" And don't even get me started on the fact that you can only collect about 2/3rds of them without using motion controls, which I think is a crock anyways given my previous statement about how impossible it is to do that if you're playing the console as it was designed to be played.

I just do not see a 10 here...if it were some random start up without an iconic plumber helming it, it would be an 8-8.5...that's the honest to goodness truth. I enjoy this game quite a bit, but it is in no way better looking, more in-depth, or developed better than countless other games this year. It is a clear example of icon bias, and that's perfectly fine...I just think it's funny to see people (not any of you to be clear) trash other games for the exact same things that this one is doing, but they refuse to see anything wrong at all here.

As far as myself goes, I'm willing to go upper 8s low 9s. I found Galaxy, with the planets/moons and gravity aspect was way more revolutionary in terms of 3D Mario game play. But, in this game, the transformation mechanic is pretty ground breaking as far as what you can control and what those abilities can do for you. That said, I am totally with you on too many catch rabbit, talk to Peach, stomp the ground, ect... similarities in moon acquisition tactics.

Strong points of the game to me go:

Capture mechanic
Music
Graphics
Kingdom variety
Unlockables
Puzzle solving
Wedding Amiibo Line is SICK!
Post Game/ Post Post Game areas
2D Mario levels

Weak points:

Too many cheap moon earning tasks
Enemy count kind of low
Too many repetitive/similar tasks to do for moons
"Final Post Post Game" to dos.
Sometimes floaty controls in 2D levels.

I highly recommend everyone get that new Bomberman update! Great additions of arenas and "players."

ALSO, who has Rocket League on PC/XBX? I got the Switch version and you can do cross format play as a Switch owner with those. PS versions don't do Cross Format play.

What's your opinion on the pay-to-win debate surrounding Battlefront 2? I know it's nefarious as all hell, and I would never partake, but I feel like this is something that Nintendo has been doing for years with their amiibo lines with little to no negative backlash at all.

Related...but Battlefront 2 Starfighter Assault on a 70" UHD/HDR is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

I'm not too familiar with the amiibos, but DLC is a problem when it comes at the expense of enjoyable gameplay.

In the past, most paid DLC came in the form of multiplayer map packs and single player expansions. They added fun new content.

Since then we've seen the rise of "free" mobile games which make their money off cosmetics and power ups. So mobile game makers starting making their game intentionally boring to incentivize buying power ups to ease the grind. Instead of DLC to make the game more fun, we have DLC to make the game less tedious

And unfortunately it worked. Bad mobile games started making tons of money off the pay to win model. And now we're seeing it in AAA titles. And it's terrible. I won't buy Battlefront or any other game that handicaps the player to push paid DLC.

Meh. I feel like P2W should be reserved for F2P games but I don’t really care that much. It sucks but it doesn’t send me into a rage like the rest of the internet. If companies are so money hungry they could easily make $$$ items cosmetic-only and probably make just as much money without (hardly) any backlash.

My feelings as well...I'm still playing Battlefront and enjoying the hell out of it, but it definitely sucks that games are going the way of profit over product. Overwatch is the clear example of how to monetize games after sale.

Amiibo:

IMO, there is what Amiibo was supposed to be and there is what Amiibo is... and there is what Amiibo gets used for. Originally it was to be the Nintendo equivalent to Skylanders where you had a scannable figure to give you a character in your game you could personalize and use. Smash Bros was the first game to use them in an actual way like Skylanders with them being a trainable fighter and all. Their next best use was as a "trainable" AI character in a Mario Party game. Then, what happened due to the character line up, stocking situations/supply, and what not they became collector items for Nintendo characters. After those first two games Nintendo has really been on a scannable unlock tear for costumes/skins, weapons, gear, ect... in the games they have had uses for. It seems like that now though Nintendo is pricing them as collectible figures for a particular game and if you buy them you get some early bonuses or other cool items.

**********************

As far as DLC goes in general, it gets to be murky path to travel because of all the ways people use it and then the costs for such.

I'd say personally, though, if I got REAL added content at a fair price I would be game. Then again, I think it is kind of a case by case basis overall and in most games.

Micro Transactions on the other hand seem like a cheap way to put out a free game but make up money on the back end with enhancers you pay for.

If you are talking about Zelda, you can nearly everything in game at some point so the chests are merely getting them sooner rather than later. And the Guardian Armor only really helps a little, you need those Guardian busing arrows! Or the Master Sword.

THe only really needed Amiibo unlock is the Fierce Deity costume. I mean, a Sheikh stealth costume is arguably needed but you can buy them/earn them so...

You basically just described the exact reason why everyone is pissed about Battlefront.

So I can lay in bed and play the emulator on my TV, using an xbox controller. The TV is set up like a 2nd monitor so my wife can still use the PC while I'm playing an emulated game

As for the game of the moment, I'm loving Twin Snakes. Some MGS fans crap on it because the cut-scenes are more outlandish than the original (Snake does a backflip onto a mid-air rocket for example) but it's a game, not a documentary. This game has a psychic/telekinetic boss fight, an invisible ninja who gets off on pain, a dude who stands there expressionless while beaten eaten alive by hundreds of ravens, not to mention everyone breaking the 4th wall all the time. Realism was not the objective!

Older post but I've been playing a ton of emulated games lately as a couple friends and I are trying to beat a huge list of games. I was able to get a program that has an NES emulator packaged with all of the ROMS as well as a loader to make it easy to play whatever game you want, same with SNES. I just use my PS4 controller for those consoles, but I bought an adapter off of Amazon so I can plug my N64 controller into my computer to get the authentic feeling of playing those games (I've played OoT, MM, and Goldeneye so far with a few more to go on the N64). I also bought something similar for my GameCube controller. Would totally recommend buying the adapters rather than using a PS3/PS4/XBOX controller as the older controllers feel so much better to me when playing the games.

I also built a new computer recently that has a brand new 8700K that should last me a few years, and tested out Demon's Souls on the RPCS3 emulator. It ran really well and looked prettier than it did on the PS3, but I was hitting some crashes. They just released a new patch for the emulator the other day that fixed some stuff so I probably need to try it again cause I really want to play that game

Love it. Are you using Save States to beat those old games? Many of them seem impossible otherwise.

I was thinking of getting an SNES Classic to introduce my 4 y/o to my childhood favorites, but I've never seen one for sale except for 2x above list price on ebay. So I've been looking into building a NES/SNES/Genesis emulator box using a Raspberry Pi. Get all the nostalgia for like $50.
