Has anyone seen Brian Smith at a Rice game....I'm curious if he has been supporting Bailiff given this comedic monologue....

I find it hard to point fingers at a group of 21 year olds.

This comes down squarely on the highly paid adults who have failed to get the seniors capable and ready.

Only if you think they're doing it on purpose/capable of more and yet choosing not to do so/haven't earned their scholarships.

I say that different from the coaches in that coaches are paid professionals and they chose the players. If the players simply aren't good enough, then the coaches did a poor job of teaching or evaluation. If the players aren't earning their scholarships in terms of their effort, then being a 'good guy' who 'gets rice' has worked against us.

I sat ten rows behind the Rice bench in Australia. The players gave up in the first quarter and were half assing it most of the game. Zero heart.

That said, IMO, it's when there is clear leadership in the locker room, with one voice, that the rest of the team is willing to listen to, that a team finally can rise up and do more. Question all you want about how much of an all-time team the 2013 team might have been, they don't get anywhere near that championship without the offensive and defensive leaders emerging after that horrible start to 2012. And probably same with the leaders emerging in 2007 to be more competitive by the end of the season and to lead into that 2008 campaign.

To me, it's the one thing that I can see lacking on the field and sideline the last few years. It's never seemed like a cohesive team. Coaches can certainly try to foster it all they want, but in the end, a hard-ass doesn't work if no one wants to listen to him, either.

For starters, musical QB chairs almost never help that leadership emerge.

Right now we don't have a guy who is capable of being an offensive example, someone who the team can follow. Glaesmann and Tyner haven't gotten it done and Smalls is a freshman. So there is no one who can stand up and lead.

Sounds like a great experience for these kids. Can we go back soon? Good news is these seniors and coaches are both almost done and JK can start the program over.

It comes down squarely on Rice's reluctance to fund a successful modern day college football program.
