College basketball players being college basketball players
The season hasn't even begun yet and three UCLA freshmen are in deep caca after being accused of shoplifting sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store in China (they are in China for their season opener).

Freshmen LiAngelo Ball (from the infamous Ball family), Cody Riley and Jalen Hill have remained in a hotel in Hangzhou to await further developments in the legal process while their Bruins teammates traveled to Shanghai for the team’s season opener Friday against Georgia Tech.

The trio will not play against the Yellow Jackets and could miss additional games. Chinese authorities have up to 37 days before deciding whether to obtain official approval for an arrest.

If formal charges are brought against the basketball players … the conviction rate in China is over 99%!

They're lucky they weren't in North Korea.

Meanwhile, Daddy Ball said it wasn't a big deal about his son's arrest.

Daddy needs to talk to Otto Warmbier's daddy about what can happen to an American accused of a crime in an unfriendly country.

Hopefully not one dime from the gov't. Better be from the families or cash advances from their agents...

Relax - just exaggerating a bit.

You don't have to tell me that - I work all the men's basketball games at Rice (although disclaimer - I went to UCLA and I did have a UCLA basketball player in one of my classes once which I never realized until he showed up for the first time all semester for the final exam which he finished in about 10 minutes).

These three geniuses decided, "Hey, let's go to a communist country, where “oppression” is outlawed, and pull the ***t we pull in the US of A."

Why does every generation in America seem to have to learn this?

Well I guess we can pretty clearly see where Baby Ball gets this idea that this okay. Or “not a big deal”.

Well, not so sure about that, from what I’ve read they can be held as long as 3 month, longer for even a hearing. Prosecutors get a conviction rate of some ridiculous number like 99%. Sentences range from 3 to 10 yrs...

That, for some dumasses that I’m sure planned to be playing pro ball (probably by this time next year), is a Yuuuuge deal. As in ALL of College, and/or prime years of pro-playing. Not to mention loss of skills, loss of conditioning and Lord knows what else is possible.

For sunglasses. Freaking idiots.

The players are probably going to be lucky. Trump is in China right now and I suspect U.S. officials can work behind the scenes to make sure the three aren't prosecuted.

But I do think that UCLA should suspend all three for the season, if there is evidence they did indeed steal the sunglasses. Those things are not cheap - $500 and upwards apiece depending on the type of glasses.

Wonder if they will come back and tell us how oppressed they are in the USA?

Yea, I suspect they'll get off. Ucla will probably slap them on the wrist with a 3 game suspension.
