OT: Nashville approves MLS stadium plans
Metro council provides final approval on stadium for MLS expansion team. Plan is conditional on being granted an expansion slot. MLS commish Garber has indicated that the approval of a soccer-specific stadium could vault Nashville to the top of the list for one of two expansion slots next month. Especially now that St. Louis, Cincy, Detroit, and Charlotte rejected stadium proposals:

That works for Middle Tennessee and WKU fans, and I suppose UAB fans as well.

I'd say they're doing a little more than looking, I'll be surprised if they stay put honestly.

San Diego was probably in trouble from the start with Sacramento almost a lock for one of the 2 December slots. Very unlikely they would use both spots for CA teams with so many untapped, strong soccer markets in the Central/Eastern time zones. Though there are 2 more slots to be announced this summer.

When would these new teams begin play? And would the Nashville team start out in Nissan Stadium until this new stadium is finished?
I think this would be great for Nashville although, despite living in Franklin, I doubt I'd ever attend. Just not a soccer fan, personally.

Forgive my ignorance... but $260 million for a soccer stadium? Does pro soccer generate that kind of scratch in the US?

Will start MLS play in 2019. They will play the first season in USL at First Tennessee Park beginning 2018 season regardless of MLS decision. The final two expansion slots, named this summer, will begin MLS play in 2020.

The total amount is for mixed use development that will go around the stadium (think The Battery around the Braves' Suntrust Park but with residential space, too). The team ownership group will be paying $10 million per year for 29 years plus a final payoff to retire the debt. An MLS team will easily generate that even without the business/residential complex. There's also other events that will be hosted at the park including USMNT friendlies, Gold Cup, EPL preseason/exhibitions, high school, concerts, etc.

Two expansion teams will be awarded in December, of which Nashville hopes to be one, and will begin play in 2020.

Nashville's own timeline projects for them to play in a temporary stadium in 2020, with their stadium finishing in 2021, but I doubt it would be Nissan Stadium. Not sure the thinking would be to play a year in a stadium more than twice the size of the stadium you're building.
