Blaine Taylor, ODU's all-time winningest coach, had a 62% win percentage at ODU...lower than Jeff Jones at 64%.

Percentages are pretty similar, however Blaine's teams played in a much tougher CAA than the recent C-USA has been and that should be taken into account also if those coaching comparisons are to be made.

Playing a tougher schedule. BT also had one miserable 5 win year. He also took us to three NCAA tournaments and an NIT F4. He even won a game in the tournament. Im OK with Jeff for now, but other than BTs drunk year, I don't see how he and JJ are even close yet. Hopefully Jeff reaches and surpasses what Blaine did, but he's got a way to go first.

4 NCAA Tournaments actually. 2005 (Michigan State), 2007 at-large (Butler), 2010 (Notre Dame/Baylor), 2011 (Butler).

I have vague memories of that butler game, I could be wrong but I remember the game being in jersey? I think that was the game that seemed to be going OK until all of the sudden they had a 3 point party and we lost control. The only thing I remember with certainty is spilling my beer in chichos cuz I was drunk and mad.

looking at the stats now i was wrong about the location, but they hit 9 threes against us.

You're right. Man, that was a strong run. 05, 07, 10, 11. Plus an NIT Final 4. Thats 5 out of 7 years in a row.

We had another nice run from 92-99 that included 3 NCAAs and 3 NITs for 6 out of 8 seasons.

That pretty much wraps up my time as a Monarch fan, which is probably why Im such a fan.

Its also why I think its entirely reasonable for us to expect to go to the NCAAs at least every 3 or 4 seasons... because thats exactly what we've done consistently in the past. This year will be 7 years, which is entirely unacceptable, though only 5 will have been with JJ so far. Hopefully, the drought ends this season.

Recruit players that fit your system...or 2) Adapt to the players that you have recruited that don't fit your system. Will Jones adapt? These guys are GREAT in transition. Let them go coach.

The other thing to consider is that he has had a handful of very good teams over is 20 years, but always returns to mediocrity in the long run. Are we just seeing one of those occasional good cycles? I sure hope not, because 1 or 2 good years getting us another 5 bad years would be the worst possible scenario to me. I would rather suck for one more year and make a change than just see him do enough to keep his job then revert back to mediocrity.

Also, the recruiting has been solid, and compared to what we have seen up until the last 2 classes is very good, but it is still not ranked at the top of CUSA. I guess we will see where we are after the most recent commit, but prior to that, this year's class was 4th. That is not killing it unless you only compare it to his previous classes.

... and this

I don't even know what this means? Is the long run the last year he coached? He had a 58% win percentage at UVA, 54% at American, and 64% at ODU. He's consistently coached good teams with a "handful" of bad seasons, but no bad seasons were sustained....hey, how about that!

What???? None of those winning percentages are good. ODU is the only one that is even decent.
Yeah, I was responding to this post.

This is the easy part, going from mediocre to decent. I will be very surprised and eating an oversized helping of crow if we see sustained high level success under a coach who has never in 20+ years been able to accomplish that.

What? Jones has coached teams that did major damage in the NCAA tourney

Hence the use of the word SUSTAINED. What happened shortly after those deep runs at UVA? How many runs of sustained high level success did he have at American?

Im not sure your definition of sustained, but UVA was consistently good under his watch. They essentially had 1 bad year and he was gone.

21 wins- tourney
20 wins- NIT champ
21 wins-tourney
18 wins- tourney
25 wins- tourney
12 wins
18 wins-tourney
11 wins (gone)

At American, they were a consistently good Patriot league team outside of his first year and 2 others (out of 13 seasons). Unless sustained is being a great team every single year you are the coach, I don't see how success was not sustained.

Wow he was great at uva 2 decades ago and was a "good" patriot league coach 10 years ago. He hasn't won an NCAA tourney game since UVA. That tells me all I need to know.

Also being "good" in the patriot league is a joke. Outside of Bucknell and a couple good years from Lehigh it's a nothing conference where Jones did nothing of significance.

Taking away his last year Blaine had a 66% winning percentage against much tougher in-conference and out of conference competition.

Vast majority of Jones wins are currently against 200 or worse rpi teams. This is a garbage argument even by your extremely low standards.

Do you think JJ should have been fired already? How do you feel about last year's recruiting class and the commits from the 2018 class?

Based on this year's recruits and last year's recruits JJ deserves another 2 or 3 years to get us into the NCAAs.

I can't wait for the crow dinner party if these last two classes are even close to as good as we think they'll be! The true sign of maturity is being able to admit when you're wrong. I wonder how many of the hyper-emotional "fire JJ" posters will man up?

OK. For all you round ball guys -- just how good do you think the Monarchs will be this year? As a guy not all that close to the program, I am getting a little excited just reading the stuff you guys are putting up here. So how many wins do you see for the regular season? 22? 24? -- more than that? It's starting to sound to me like this could well be a 23-24 win season. Yes? No?

Not that I'd be happy with it, but I predict 17-13 (11-7)... similar to last season. Our starting 5 look good, but no depth up front means we'll struggle in games where foul trouble is a factor, especially against bigger teams. OOC I think we lose 2/3 in Charleston, VCU, Richmond, Fairfield and either Towson or W&M.

I was gonna go with 27 wins earlier in the year but then we lost two big men. Always something with the Monarchs! I'm in the 22 to 24 win camp. I like the line up we have, a lot. We will have to keep big men Stith and Porter healthy for sure. NCAA stuff is secondary to me. 23 wins or so and its a successful season in my eyes.

We still have two weeks until the opener, but knock on wood, no one has been suspended yet.

I'm not one for predictions or guarantees. But given that they won 19 with a tougher OOC schedule last year and the maturation of our core, 23 wins seems like it should be the minimum expectation. Any more is great. But less than 23, something went really wrong.

JJs lowest win total was 18 coming off the worst season in history. You really think this team is worse than that? 04-chairshot

We will move to a zone that was supposedly very effective vs GW the other day. If we get in foul trouble, we will find ways around it.
