Our rivals are Tulane, East Carolina and Memphis....and I guess the "powers-that-be" shat their pants on that one , too.
This is not to degrade UAB, La Tech or anyone...they just ain't our rivals.
Do majority Southern Miss fans feel this way? I know a lot of fellow UAB fans that consider Southern Miss to be a big rival. Memphis is still probably at the top of the list for us though.
See.. i'll disagree with beaver on LA tech.. But I'm one of those "old school" believers. A rivalry doesn't start/end just because you weren't there for those games. Now if a rivalry stops, and isn't picked back up, so be it... because the schools agree to stop it.
Top rivals:: Played them a lot, and often... and it was for games you had a crowd for, home or away.
Memphis, LA Tech, Tulane, ECU
2nd rivals:: Played often, may not have had a crowd, but it was easy to get into the trash talk (whether in good nature, or serious "f-u" trash talk(MissSt.) . UAB/Alabama/Miss State could easily be elevated into the top tier, if the games are played on a yearly/near yearly basis (So UAB would likely get to the top rival after a few more years.. we're at having only played 15 games between the two right now... so I easily see this moving to top tier soon.)
UAB, ULL, L'Ville, Alabama (yeah, I know... we keep losing to them, but it's still an important game to USM fans), Mississippi State
3rd tier: A few more games and it'd get up to one of the primary rivals. these are games that would be easy to get excited over watching.. just needed a few more games regularly scheduled for it to be an official rivalry, but will likely never happen.
FSU, Houston, Cincinnati, and Auburn.
