Did not make through two years. So who will be next?
Georgia Southern won the Sun Belt in 2014 and was competitive in 2015. When Fritz left for Tulane they intentionally or through the malfeasance of the AD repeated the mistake of Southern Miss when Fedora left, they hired a guy who scrapped what got them where they were and went a different direction.

Hopefully we can get back on track now. This ex-coach had no idea what he was doing. GaSouthern, though not the largest school, has a scrappy fan base. We got a guy fired that has a winning record. Definitely not a place to "learn" how to be a head coach.
I honestly don't care if we go back to the flexbone or not. I only hope that we bring in someone with a track record of winning with a potent offense.

This is dangerous ground for a new FBS school.
You fire the coach you lose continuity and it could spiral the program into a hole.

They lost continuity by hiring Summers. They went 18-7 their first two years in the Sun Belt and lost Fritz and are 5-13 since including being routed by a previously winless UMass and are 2-13 in the last 15.

Ga Southern was 0-6 and was getting beat badly by otherwise winless teams. And they appear to be getting worse as the season progressed. They're in a hole.

Turns out it's a bad idea to offer a wildly successful incumbent head coach a rolling 1 year contract and then when he walks to take a real contract to ignore his highly-regarded, handpicked successor and instead hire an unqualified replacement who wants to change the entire program identity. If it weren't for mismanagement by their AD, they'd be where App State is now. At least that's what I heard, GSU fans can correct me if I saw incorrect info.
Doesn't Bielema have a giant buyout? Might need to call the Waltons for help on that one.

This is 100% correct. Some disagree with the hand picked successor part but I don’t. Let this sink in...Summers first year he brought in a high school coach and a D2 HC as co-offensive coordinators...at a school with a very vocal fan base. Not a place to learn how to be a HC. GS is not a place that’s particularly hard to win at, so the whole situation was nutty....our AD messed up very badly...his seat is probably warm also.

From what I've read of your AD that'd probably for the best as well. Good luck to you guys.

It's pretty big, but at this point it might be worth it to just make him go away.
A buddy of mine is a huge Hogs fan and was excited when Bielema was hired. Now he can't wait to get rid of him. I'll bet that's a feeling among many Hog faithful.....

RE: Another one bites the dust. Ga Southern Coach Fired
Summers was in over his head. He just was not prepared to be a head coach. He was hired because our AD was shell-shocked at how fast Fritz came and went. He wanted to hire a coach with ties to South Georgia thatbwould stay a while. He took a chance on Summers and it flopped big time. Now I hope he’s learned his lesson.
G5 schools are not final destinations for good coaches. We have to accept this. Having coaches get snatched by larger programs means you’re doing something right and hiring the right people. Look at Arkansas State. They had something crazy like 4 new coaches in the last 5 years or something yet they’ve also won the SBC title 4 Times in the last 5 years because they’re replacing amazing coaches with other amazing coaches. They are proof that you can be a springboard school and still be successful.
We need to recognize that to be the best, we have to bring in the best, and to do that we have to put up real money and quit playing games with contracts. We have been doing better and better with our budget size and could afford any proven FCS coach we wanted as long as a larger program wasn’t also interested.

At least give the Georgia Southern AD credit for pulling the trigger after less than two full seasons, unlike the incompetent Hawaii AD who let Norm Chow continue to run our program into the ground for almost four full seasons. We're still repairing the damage from that train wreck.

Boise State feels your pain as well since they hired Harsin away from you guys.

Boise State feels your pain as well since they hired Harsin away from you guys.
When we got word Harsin was negotiating with Boise my group of about 6 guys that share a text group to talk AState were ecstatic. When Boise hired him, we called it the Mulligan hire, gave us a chance to do it over.
If he hadn't fired himself as play caller and handed it over to Drinkwitz to basically reinstall a good portion of the Malzahn offense, you never would have looked at him.
We call the game Drink took over "the Frankie Jackson game" because the junior linebacker took over the locker room at half down 6-0 and gave an impassioned speech about carrying on the legacy and playing for the seniors and came back to win the game.
We call the last home game of Harsin the "TMo Game" in honor of our AD. As Harsin was getting booed off the field at halftime our AD came on the field took a microphone, started off thanking the fans for being there and asking them to stick around for the seniors even though it was cold and we were down ten points. He went a stream of consciousness rant that fired the fans up. When the team came back out the fans were on their feet yelling and screaming. First GaSt possession got a 21 yard scoop and score, second possession blocked a punt for a TD to swing the game to four point AState lead.
We deeply appreciate getting a Mulligan (and $1.75 million) from Boise State.

Summers basically got that job because he was the DC for the Fiesta Bowl, though I think George O'Leary probably deserves the most credit for that game. Summers did a good but not great job for us the following year with plenty of talent, then did well enough at CSU for one year. But Southern went out and hired a guy who had 2 years of DC experience to be HC, and the results speak for themselves. He'd be a good DC hire for a low-tier P5/high-tier G5 or a position coach at a higher-tier P5.

When NIU had Jerry Kill leave and replaced with Dave Doeren, who left after 2 years to be replaced by the OC Rod Carey (which there were a lot of questions about and still are) at least they kept the offense more or less the same. I'd have to think it would be an even bigger disruption for Georgia Southern to scrap their offense for something else. I suspect they're best off getting a new coach and going back to what worked so well for them.
