yes, but if they dont punt then we probably dont get the ball back.
Except Houston got the ball back 2 more times, and we stopped them both times.
There is no way to be definitive with this. Either move looks good if it works, and terrible if it doesn't. He went with the odds and made the right football move. It just didn't work out.
OTOH, I bet Norvell would have gone for it, if the roles were reversed.
Not sure that mattered at all. The goal was to ground and pound---burning clock. As for our last two possessions----the quick strike passing game is no longer our strong suit---especially two minute drill style. We're kinda the 15 play drive grind it out offense these days. For us-----those last 2 possessions were last gasp long shots at accomplishing something we havent done all year. Scoring fast is basically like asking Major to run a 4.4 forty.

Yeah, that seems right. My point was just that one decision on 4th and 1 was by no means cut and dried. You can make a reasonable argument for or against each choice.
It's just that a few peeps believe one way was dead right and one way was dead wrong, which is false. Hindsight is always 20-20.

No.. it was the right call to punt honestly. If you're ahead, and memphis needs a TD to beat you you can not give them a short field to do it. If we go for it and our subpar offense does subpar things, then youd all be saying "WE HAVE ED OLIVER ON DEFENSE WHY DIDNT HE PUNT"
Because the defense was getting roasted?

Shouldn't the offense be able to get one yard? Given the way the offense was running the ball, and the way the defense was barely slowing Memphis down, which had the greater chance of happening?
As a Memphis fan, I really wanted Houston to punt the ball, which leads me to believe that they should've gone for it. Do what your opponent doesn't want you to do.

Yep. I wanted them to punt, too. So did our coaches.

A. Houston goes for it and gets the first down;
B. Houston punts and the defense gets a stop.
Given what we saw in the 2nd half, which one of those two scenarios would you say was more likely?
That stuff on 3rd down can make you think though.
And it's exactly what Applewhite was thinking. Here's the proof. Start watching at about 1:30
As someone posted in the comments section for that vid:
He answered a question with a question, "Did you see 1st and 2nd down?" I would have answered.....Well coach, did you see the previous 6 offensive drives in the second half by Memphis? Did ya?

RE: ***Official Memphis @ Houston Game Thread*** (10/19)
Watching the video, the punt was a fake but the long snapper got it too high and the upman couldn't get it. Look at him reach up to get it, and turn when he can't expecting the punter to fumble. You guys were lucky the punter handled that and got it off.
I know applewhite said in the interview that it wasn't a fake, but it sure looks like one on video. Maybe he just doesn't want to admit they couldn't execute a fake. And he wants to keep it in his bag of tricks since they didn't get it off.
RE: ***Official Memphis @ Houston Game Thread*** (10/19)
Two thoughts;
1- Not going for it was a mistake. We ran for over 200 yards and Postma, while not a great QB, has been very good getting that extra yard when most needed. Roll him out of the pocket and let him do his thing. Instead, you put in Catalon on third and short and he got stuffed. That's a trend for Catalon. He's not who you want in that situation but he's who our coaches turn to. (Yeah, I know, Birden was hurt on second down).
2- If that was indeed a fake punt, or even worse, a fake-fake punt as some of our fans are claiming, then we are a train wreck.

Exactly what I saw, as well. We have debated this back and forth so much that I just posted it in a separate thread, so it wouldn't get buried.
I am convinced 100% that it was meant to be a fake punt. Applewhite just wasn't going to throw his long snapper under the bus in the post-game presser.

That, IMO, was definitely a fake punt try, but the long snapper either snapped it too high or too hard, or both. But you can see the up blocker reach up and try to catch the snap. A blocker would never do that.

If they got that first down they wouldve ran the clock out with little we could do. They only got the ball back because we scored a TD in 40 seconds after they punted.
They get that first down and that game is likely over.

Yeah if the “if” scenario happen you are probably right or we only have 2 minutes or less if we forced them to punt on the next drive. We still had 2 time outs

I disagree, b/c Houston got the ball back twice after that, and we stopped them both times with turnovers.

That's like me saying that Applewhite's decision to punt was vindicated because Memphis went three and out on the possession following the Postma fumble.
Situation matters.

Well if it makes you feel better. I think Major was trying to go for it on 4th. Your snapper messed the play up. I don’t think it would have worked because we had defenders right up on him anyway.
