They get Germany as the 2nd place team in our group and then Brazil if they win that game. If we get past Paraguay we get the winner of Japan/England

Yeah, I would have preferred Ghana's very advantageous draw for winning the group, but third place is better than 2nd place here.

That being said, this is still a very tough match. We have not traditionally performed well against South American sides at the Youth level tournaments. Colombia knocked the U23's out of the Olympics and beat the U17's today and the U20's were knocked out by Venezuela.

Given the choices as a third place team were Paraguay, Iran, and Brazil. I'd have taken Paraguay every time.

Iran has looked like the greatest team ever assembled through the group stage. Glad we didnt get them

Great team movement on the first goal, Carleton played a great through pass and on a single touch Akinola plays an inch perfect ball across to Weah for the goal.

RE: OT: Officially The Official Soccer Thread
This is a weird match. Not sure how its still only 1-0 at half. Paraguay spent most of the last 10 minutes pressing for a goal like it was the end of the match, not the end of the half. Gosselin had a shot off the post, and Akinola had one cleared off the line.

I admit, I am not the greatest at reading formations, but Paraguay looks to be using something similar to a 4-3-4, they are playing with essentially no midfield, and running 4-5 men forward every attack. Would explain how they've scored so many, and allowed so many goals this year.

Germany ate Colombia for breakfast in the first match today. 4-0. Glad we didn't finish runner up.

U17's face either England or Japan (Likely England) in the quarterfinals Saturday. Goslin will miss the match due to yellow card accumulation. Not sure on Akinola's or Ferry's status after they left today's game with injuries

In more depressing news, the US Senior team will travel to Portugal for one of their two friendlies next month. Hopefully a couple of the U17's are considered for call ups.

My first thought in all of that, FC Cincinnati is going to be an MLS team as well as Detroit.

MLS cannot afford to have a 700 miles wide gapin hole in their coverage in the most populated region in America.

The "Golden Triangle" (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania) is still arguably the largest target population...although I would understand why Texas makes so much sense, all of the "immigrants" do make attendance numbers much more gaudy.

The Crew bombshell just outlines another reason why Pro/Rel will never happen. Owners will never be able to fleece cities and counties for stadiums/tax deals anymore.

England U17's beat Japan 0-0 (5-3 PK's) to advance to play the US. England's keeper actually trash talked Japan as they were stepping up to take their shots. Kind of weird to watch.

Another terrible home performance by Real Madrid. Lloris had 3 great saves especially the one on Benzema. Tottenham fans should be cautious because Real Madrid have been much better on the road this season and are finally getting healthy, except for Bale who is always injured.
