RE: OT: Officially The Official Soccer Thread
Side note, the American Outlaws released a very strongly worded statement yesterday requesting Sunil Gulati resign. Not sure I expected that out of them. Most of the Fox commentating team is doing the same with the exception of Alexi Lalas, who stopped short of that. Julie Foudy's name was brought up recently as someone who might be interested in running.

Guy running the New York Cosmos requested the same thing, but considering US Soccer notoriously does not like the NASL, I don't see that going over the same way.

Bad loss for the U17's today. Drops us to 3rd in the group. Will likely face Iran or Brazil in knockout round

You should these Mexican kids here, they have great technical ability and very few of them play for the top Clubs since their parents can't afford to pay. My parents help out some African refugee families in Cincinnati and their kids are great soccer players. The only reason they play for the best Select teams is because my parents pay for them. They are technically and athletically superior yet some of the parents complain about them playing over their kids and they have threatened to take their kids off the team and stop paying. What ends up happening is they sit on the bench while the average Suburban kids play!!

Soccer aka real football is the most Capitalistic Sport on the planet you right wing moron. NFL and NBA have salary caps which is socialistic and communist. No one gives a crap about the NFL outside of North America, and we invented Basketball and Baseball and are far ahead the rest of the world.

American Football is actually gaining popularity quickly in Germany. My German relatives enjoy the NFL and watch whenever they can over there, and I took them to a Texans game and a pair of UTSA games while they came to visit not long ago, as one of them wished to watch as much football as possible while here (lol). From what I understood, Germany also has their own American Football league in which teams from various cities compete, much as the soccer teams do, only without quite so many fans in attendance. But it is growing there.

Yeah, American Football is growing in England, Germany, and Australia. It will never be what soccer is in England or Germany or Rugby is in Australia, but it's got a pretty nice following.

Oh don't overestimate the popularity of Rugby in Australia. Rugby is arguably not even the most popular type of rugby in australia (besides national team stuff) and it may be the 3rd most popular type of football there.

He's 17. He'll get stronger. The kid has yet to see a defender he wont take on. We dont have many players like that in the pool. Pulisic might be it. Deuce was back in his 20s but not anymore. Lee Nguyen does too, I guess.

Carleton reminds me so much of young Clint Mathis.

It use to be close between rugby and aussie rules. Rugby's league has struggled lately though, the european league has been climbing though.

Aussie rules has flourished though, a womens division was formed last year and got overwhelming crowds (several games were forced to bigger venues) and got good ratings. I hoped my crows would be the first to a double, the women won, the men were thrashed in the grand final (ausdie rules superbowl) by richmond unfortunetly.

National rugby/international tests are still huge. So is the Aussie rules international vs the gaelic (irish) footballers. Go you tube some of those games talk about two sides who want to destroy each other it got so out of hand they almost stopped doing it.

Well, we'll know a little tomorrow. Board of Directors has called an "emergency meeting" tonight, and a conference call with the Media is set for Friday. Its expected that Arena's departure will be one of the items on the agenda. Bruce by the way gave another interview today and was his usual defiant self. Deflected all the tough questions and pretended nothing was wrong at all. It's sort of like he's head of the titanic minutes after it struck an iceberg, and not worried about lowering the life boats because the ship is unsinkable.

I don't know if it occurred to anyone recently, but our next competitive game will likely be the Copa America in Brazil in June of 2019. That's a lot of friendlies. It's going to absolutely destroy our FIFA ranking. I wouldn't be shocked if we dropped to 4th ranked in CONCACAF by the time this is over.

That is disconcerting and did you see that UEFA Nations League starts after the World Cup which means no more friendlies with European teams.

Do these two leagues have an actual plan to get there? Or, as I suspect, does their plan involves a snap of the fingers?

Because I'm of the opinion nearly everyone calling for pro/rel in the US has no plan. other than a snap of the fingers to get to the pro/rel system.

We're doing Copa America and Gold Cup in 2019?

Copa is making a lot of changes that were trialed at the Centenario. They are expanding to 16 teams, and will be moving the tournament beginning in 2020 so that it is held the same year as Euro's. Opening up for the possibility that CONCACAF teams could play with their top lineups.

It's also expected that we will be in line to host in 2020 since they'll be holding the tournament 2 straight years again.

A lot of the media has been talking about the tournament lately as if its almost a certainty that we will play in the 2019 version. Some talk a couple European teams may play as well that year. And lets be honest, what else are we going to do for the next 2 years?

Arena officially out as manager. Gulati refuses to resign, but has not yet decided if he wants to run for reelection.

Twellman's mad again and is spitting fire on Sports Center. He must have been taking advice from Alexi Lalas.

Yes, but the last one is apparently going to dig his heels in. That entire press conrference made it sound like he fully plans to run again.

The whole conference is being roundly abused by most media outlets as well. Coincidentally enough, the reporters who you knew from Twitter had the hard hitting questions never got called on by US Soccer to ask them. The questions that did get asked were generally softballs lobbed up by the few media still in Gulati's circle.

I do admit, Gulati is at least smart enough to realize that it would be really, really stupid to schedule home friendlies next month. I'm not sure he would like some of the signs and banners at that game. Not to mention that US Soccer is going to have a hard enough time convincing people to show up. Friendly attendance has dropped significantly, and its only going to get worse after this. Looks like 2 games in Europe next month.

I would agree if he were a classic playmaker (ie distributor without needing the ball at his feet), but he is a one-on-one dribbler and attacker. Just something that will hopefully develop over time...I certainly don't see him being able to hold possession against the Sule's, Van Djik's, and Varane's on the generation he'll be playing against at the moment.

Having less friendlies with European teams isnt a bad thing. More friendlies with CONMEBOL and CAF teams which provided just as good competition in many cases in more hostile environments.

He's VERY good...just wish he were a few inches taller and a few pounds heavier. I feel like his game doesn't lend itself too terribly well to being easily pushed off a ball.

He doesn't need to grow more, many of the best playmakers are short like Iniesta, Pirlo, Modric, Isco, and others. Tata Martino called him a classic South American #10.

His height isnt a problem. His lack of strength is. Modric had the same problem when he came to Spurs from Dinamo Zagreb. Look him a few seasons to get strong enough to not to be knocked off the ball. Little guys can be strong just not usually at 17 years old. It'll take a few years for him to grow that strength.
