Quote:A dozen police cars were parked early Monday in a ring around the Christopher Columbus statue at the circle named for him hours before a parade in his honor was set to step off along Fifth Ave.
The large police presence follows more than a month of political sparring over whether to remove the controversial statue and a spate of vandalism at other Columbus statues in the city.
In addition to the NYPD vehicles lining the perimeter of Columbus Circle, police barricades were positioned throughout the intersection.
"They were protesting last night," said Frankie, who rents bicycles from a pedestrian island on the circle. "They came up from [Broadway] were all around the statue. I was told they'd be out here even if it rains."
Quote:About a dozen protestors held signs Monday inside a dedication ceremony for a statue of Christopher Columbus, funded by private donations, outside a town office building.
Organizer Erica Roggeveen Byrne of Southington said people who oppose the idea of a monument to Columbus on municipal property asked in vain that a plaque be included nearby citing the damage Europeans inflicted on Native Americans after Columbus arrived in the Americas.
Quote:COLUMBUS -- Protesters took to City Hall today urging leaders to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus, which they say is a symbol of white supremacy.
The organization, Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) led the event with speakers, music and several moments of silence in solidarity with Charlottesville.
“We just hope for change,” said Stacey Little, representing the People’s Justice Project.
“Columbus being the city that it is, it’s supposed to be so progressive, supposed to be so smart, should take this moment and this time to do what’s right,” Little said.
She’d like to see the statue removed but Little and others there told 10TV the cause is bigger than the statues.

Christopher Columbus
Bwahahahaha
To properly conflict them into a self loathing destruction the "right" must couch all anti Columbus protests as being anti Hispanic and thereby an attempt to erase the heritage and culture of all Spanish speaking cultures in the Americas in one massive fascist revisionist attack. It should be spoken of as being on par with the attempts to erase Jewish heritage from Poland.
Then the right could just sit back and let the factions of the left go into feeding frenzy mode. It would be like watching Hillary and Nancy Pelosi square off in a cage match. Priceless!

Throw a little anti Catholicism in there and it would cause a total identity politics sjw meltdown.

Why do we celebrate a guy who never even made it to these shores. Hispanola was as close as he got. I believe that's the Dominican Republic. The lesson of Columbus needs to be re-taught. In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. He just never came here.

If they were smarter they might be a little pissed at De Soto, Cortez and Pizzaro....but we are talking about dimwits.

I guess that's why de Soto got a car named after him and Columbus didn't. Hernando de Soto goes a little farther.

Columbus never set one foot on US soil. So, we could do away with Columbus since he had no connections to our country. There is a movement to make this holiday as Native American day.
RE: Columbus Day (statues) - aka Libs won't stop with Confederates
The Italian immigrants of the 18th Century were the first to celebrate Columbus Day in the U.S. They used to have large parades and gatherings in NYC, Philly and other cities with large number of immigrants.
In the 1860s there was a lot of violence against the Italians, including a riot in New Orleans. As a response then President Benjamin Harrison instituted Columbus Day, to serve as a day of unity and patriotism.
