Villanueva is a hero on the battlefield, on the football field and as an American.

I wonder what the Steelers ownership will do about his defying orders and personal protest of their decision to stay in the lockerroom?

I would guess if they do anything negative towards him for this they will have crossed the rubicon.

They won't do anything. Prior to the Trump tweets, steeler players maid a point not to kneel in deference to Villanueva's service.
I have a lot of respect for him. He was at Soldier Field. Tomlinson was right to hidehas players who would have kneeled at that venue. Would have been very bad optics.

Hiding like *******. Then they got their ass best by Da Bears!

If their employers allow it, then they have the right to make whatever stupid statement they think they are making. I have the right to not watch. I enjoyed having my Sunday to myself. Didn't miss the NFL one bit.

I agree. In the end it's up to the employer. And you are right, I too enjoyed my football free Sunday.

Just let them keep kneeling and over time, weed the America hating ingrates out of the league a la KaperDick. They have the right to express themselves. The owners have a right to release them if they choose to. Free speech and actions have consequences- isn't that what the libtards always say? Let a few more of them get cut and blackballed from the league and see how many of them start standing up. The owners may not feel this way initially, but when those ratings keep dropping and crowds at the stadiums start thinning out, they'll change their tune.

People notice him but the young black man behind him with his hand on his heart is just as admirable.

Anyone think that Villanueva has a top 10 selling jersey in the league soon?

And its intolerant of others for finding that intentional lack of honor disrespectful and inappropriate for the moment?

There are "better" ways to protest and raise awareness, but it wouldn't make a difference in this climate.

I don't have a problem with people not agreeing, but I think the people who disagreed reacted in a way that they would've called others snowflakes for.

You're butchering the usage of snowflake in that context.

Again when one takes a political stance in a private setting they need to be aware it may cause a backlash. As long as the government is not being used to silence the person's rights are not being abridged

I don't think I am. I think it is a bit of snowflake syndrome coming out.

I understand that there was going to be backlash. It was unavoidable if he did what he did. I understand where people are coming from. My issue isn't with what people do. Right or wrong they're going to do what they do.

My issue stands solely with the fact that I think that it's wrong for the President to come out and speak on someone's use of free speech. Calling their mothers b*tches in the process is an extra bit of distasteful.

Yeah. Bastards would probably have been more accurate in most cases. Rimshot

They were answering Trump. Coaches, owners and players. Said FU. Simple as that.

I stand freely and willingly. As all should. But there's no compulsion to.

I wouldn't stand under threat or coercion.

They were coming out against an American President making a very anti-American statement.

It will be interesting to see if this carries into next weekend. I have a feeling you'll see the anthem played once the teams leave the field after warmups

That's all this is accomplishing, the elimination of the anthem. That's far more saddening than one moron kneeling.

What worries me is that he's moving further toward his base and further away from everyone else. Most presidents try to at least address the other side in some form or fashion. This is just a small example of how the country is being polarized. It didn't start with Trump, but he's just doing nothing but pouring gas on a fire.

Last week the story was he had cut a deal with the dems and had dropped the wall and was turning on his base.

1 Week later he makes a comment about this stupid issue and now He is is turning his back on everyone , except "his base" which is usually code for "white racists and KKK nazis".

Pure insanity from nearly all sides.

Media hyperventilation.

Equally, like four year olds.

Protesting during the national anthem? I just don't get it. A national anthem's sole purpose is to unite a country's citizens using a song.

So to protest something they perceive as divisive they do so by protesting the one thing during their "job" that is meant to unite?

And let's be very clear:

This whole thing started because Kaepernick publicly stated he didn't like his country and felt that the flag didn't represent him, and chose to use the one thing he knew would hurt people the most to make his point, and then followed it up with hateful tweets about his country. He did that while Obama was President.

The ignorant football players this year are just piggy-backing off of Kaepernick's ignorance and taking it to an extreme level.

The NFL is on the verge of a degree of self destruction I don't think they understand or realize.

Nah, they'll move the anthem's place in the show and the show will go on.

I'm sure there are quite a few people in the NFL who realize that the national anthem fiasco is not good and that there is a growing trend to tune out the product. I don't think what is happening this weekend explains all of the woes the NFL product is experiencing. While I think the anthem controversy is a significant player, it's a part of a larger set of problems that have weakened the product - specifically 1) new rules that are disrupting the flow of the game, 2) rules weakening the effectiveness of defenses in the league (like dubious "roughing" penalties and making formerly legal hits now illegal) and 3) excessive advertising spots that have affected the flow of the game.

The anthem controversy may be the straw that breaks the camel's back for a lot of fans. If the product was better and the anthem controversy was the only issue, you would not see such outrage from NFL fans like you see now - IMHO. However, when you combine a list of factors, the next gaffe is magnified and pisses more people off.

I find it amusing that so many people are using their 1st amendment right to complain about people using their first amendment right.
