We could be 12-1 and end up in the Birmingham Bowl.
The AAC doesn't have a tier system to their bowl games, so any bowl is possible.
If we go 12-1 and accept a bid in Birmingham then someone needs to be fired.
There would be two scenarios for us to go 12-1. Either we lose to UCLA or a road game, in which we end up winning AAC title game. Or we go undefeated up until the title game and lose at USF. BOTH scenarios would have us nationally ranked. NO WAY IN HELL do we accept bid to Birmingham Bowl.
If we lost to USF in the Championship game, they get the Access slot. That puts us into our contracted bowls with the AAC. I guess we could argue for the Military or Cure bowl, but it would also be VERY likely we end up in Birmingham.
But, 9-3 or 10-2 could put us in Birmingham just as easily. Do you really consider 10-2 to be a disappointing, underperforming season!?!!

if we end up in Birmingham that will be 4 straight bowl games......and that will not be disappointing
If you're expecting to finish 6-6 or 7-5 then 4 straight bowls and a Birmingham invite is acceptable.
But when you go into season being considered as one of the favorites for the access bowl invite then a minor bowl such as Birmingham is a disappointment.
That is unless you are happy with meritocracy.
This team and it's staff would look at Birmingham as a let down when their goal is New Years Day game.
When your goals is a payout of $4.17 million(your cut AFTER sharing with AAC) and you instead get $900,000 that you must split with the AAC then you will be disappointed.

You can make an argument for disappointment. You cannot make an argument for firing someone if we go to Birmingham. Or for rejecting the invitation. That's a real possibility in the AAC and in our location. And it's not Norvell's, Bowen's, or Rudd's fault. Heck, it's not even Saul's fault.

Once again, for the reading comprehension inept, THERE IS NO TIER OF BOWLS IN THE AAC. Champion doesn't go to a set bowl, last place qualifier doesn't go to a set bowl. The ONLY ways Memphis doesn't go to an AAC Bowl, Birmingham Bowl being one, is if the make the Access Bowl OR a P5 Conference doesn't have enough qualifiers and we get an exemption. It doesn't mean we are predicting 6-6 or 7-5 to make the Birmingham Bowl.
EVERY prediction I have seen has USF winning the AAC. They were picked by numerous publications, media outlets, the media and coaches at AAC Media Days. So, it isn't a fireable offense if we don't win the Championship.

I don't care where we play as long as we play a P5 program, would like BIG, ACC, Pac 12, Big 12 in that order
Let's go undefeated and really screw the committee

Not sure why any Memphis fan would complain about going to the Birmingham Bowl. Especially considering not to long ago we were all desperate to just make a bowl. This is about football, not how cute the city our game is in. A winnable game vs a lower tier SEC school close to home... in my eyes is amazing and the second best option other than the Access Bowl.

Did you mean mediocrity?
The fact is that the American's bowl tie-ins aren't great. You either win the conference and hope that Boise or Western Michigan or San Diego State don't knock you out of the Access Bowl spot....or you play in a bowl that nobody has heard of. It is what it is.

Because the B-ham Bowl is about to fall down, the city is unprepared to host a large event like a bowl game, the service industry is mostly non-caring and clueless, the traffic is hideous, the bowl hotel needs serious upgrades, Birmingham is Memphis with some of our worst problems and none of our soul, it has a history of racism, the restaurants are mostly national chains, except for Midtown, and mostly, because our team does not want to play there.
Now, in no way am I complaining about going to a bowl, and I will go proudly through the gates of hell with my team, but I think they deserve better. Our team and fans have DONE their time in B-ham.
