Can someone tell my why SMU won't win the AAC this year? They have an experienced QB in Hicks, a transfer QB who sounds legit (Gillins) an elite WR, and an impressive stable of backs. Why aren't they a favorite?

Because typically smu is not allowed to have nice things or be the beneficiary of any optimism

Not anywhere deep enough to compete for the title. If they can play well in OOC it helps everyone though.

They need better defense to be considered a legit contender. But they should again be improved like they have been the last 3 years.

everyone is giving joke answers, but ill give you a real one

the answer is culture..winning isnt simply about coaching or talent but mentality and culture especially with football becuase there are so many players. id take a 13 win g4 team with no talent than a 3 win auburn (loaded w/ 5stars) vs a top 10 team

cincy had the talent in the league and coaching to be top 3 in the AAC the last 2 years, they just lacked the culture under tubs

smu has been bad for a very long time, their biggest challenge will be playng like they expect to win, the players are used to losing.. will they bend over back to prevent a loss or just accept it

but smu has the talent to compete

Because they won 5 games last year.
And they haven't played good defense.

Looking at their schedule....6 to 7 wins max. They could go 3-1 OOC, but they a tough conference schedule.

SMU can absolutely contend for the AAC title this season

SMU should go bowling this year, but they have to play at Houston, at Navy, and at Memphis. I would be shocked if they won more than one of those games. Throw in another loss against either Tulsa or UCF and they will finish 5-3 at best. I could be wrong, but I'm going to say 7-5 with 4-4 in conference play will be a pretty good achievement.

My post was directed at the sport in general... Basketball seems to be SMU's main bread n butter.

pesik makes good points. I will say this, I believe this might be SMU's most talented team post-SWC. Gillins will eventually be the starting QB and he has elite ability. We will find out a lot against TCU. If things go our way, which rarely happens, this team could be VERY good.

Much better than the past. Biggest thing is we now have depth. This is Van Malone's year to prove he is HC caliber DC.
