CA Article on Tiger New Kicker
The article is a good read about our new kicker but also provides an insight into Norvell's savvy PR skills. He invited Tiger season ticket holders attending the practice to join the team and create crowd noise for Patterson's practice ending kick. Norvell gets it.

Ultimately, winning suffiently will define Norvell's tenure, but he is off to a good start and factors leading to success (e.g., recruiting) are positive.

Hopefully he gets some easy kicks in opening week. Later, close games, it will matter. Of course, as good as he was, Jake missed that FG at Houston in 2015. But he made most, and his BYU FG was...awesome.
Not suggesting Monroe will be an easy game. They are D1, and our kids need to be ready, especially opening week. Large numbers of their players were likely also recruited by teams like,,,Memphis . Get ready, kick that ass.

It was not too long ago that we were on of the worse special teams in the nation and now we are among the best.

Feel for any kicker who has to follow the likes of Gotti and Elliot. Would be like being a TB at USC. A position where you are expected to be better than just good.
You have one former Tiger kicker who make his Pro Bowl Hotel reservations in Hawaii before the season starts.
Then you follow right after another who has broken every school record set by the Pro Bowl kicker.

Like most (if not all) Tiger fans, I LOVE me some Jake the Snake Elliott. In fact, I remember hearing about him before most other Tigers fans.
I believe it was May of 2013 at my brother-in-law's rehearsal dinner. The majority of my wife's extended family is from the Chicago area. Although the guys are sports guys, they didn't know jack about Memphis football, nor should they have coming off the Larry Porter era. But her cousin mentioned that a buddy of his from high school had signed to play for Memphis as a kicker. I told him I'd keep an eye out for him. Little did I know what he'd become.
But I do wonder sometimes if we remember him as being better than he actually was because of one iconic moment (BYU). Hear me out before you start typing your response. Stephen A. Smith once said the greats (MJ, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter) are remembered as being the GOAT because their careers were highlighted by iconic moments we all remember. And while all those guys are in fact great, there are people will point out that others actually have better stats, even in game winning moments (like LBJ having made as many game winners as MJ). But LBJ is missing the iconic moments, of which MJ had at least 3-4 in the playoffs/Finals.
I'm not saying Elliott wasn't really, really good. But was he THAT good? Or was it that big BYU kick that elevated him to a higher status in our memories? I don't know. But Cincinnati took him as the first (and maybe only?) kicker drafted. Obviously they saw a lot of what we saw in him in terms of his ability to make clutch kicks.

He broke just about every school record set by an NFL Pro Bowl kicker. So i would say he IS that good.

The 4th highest drafter kicker in the modern draft era.... yeah, I would say he's pretty good!!!
