Yeah, I guess, but it seems like they're playing for ONLY next year.

1 thing I think it shows is that the Mets are concerned long term with Familia. Wouldn't make this move if he was fine.

And you wonder if there could be a re-trade as well with the Mets- with the Mets dealing Ramos as well..

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread
Dbacks middle infield is a mess right now:

Ahmed on DL for broken hand (happened against the Cardinals in June)
Owings broke a finger yesterday (again, against the Cardinals)

Ketel Marte, who was called up after Ahmed's injury, was just placed on the bereavement list due to the death of his mother in an auto accident.

That might make a little more sense if they've had something in the works. Otherwise I'm struggling to understand why they'd give up good prospects for Ramos.

Tony Watson? Um, okay? He's not been very impressive. A little better vs LH batters but other than FIP the numbers aren't knocking my socks off. Guess it depends what they gave up for him.

ETA: And they got Cingrani from the Reds?! Wow - an Owl coming to Los Angeles. I guess that's pretty cool, but honestly the guy is struggling.

ETA #2: They got Darvish?! Oh, man...

Looks like Brian Cashman told Billy Beane,

"Pick any of our minor leaguers ... no, wait, I didn't mean any of them ... just the ones who are currently recovering from a serious injury."

Crazy that they're going all in so soon. If Tanaka pitches well a rotation of Severino, Tanaka, Gray and Sabathia, plus that pen will make them quite dangerous. I still have questions about the lineup though

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread
Nats get Kintzler from Twins. like the move. Nats now have pen with Doolittle, Madson, Kintzler, Romero, Albers, Grace, Perez, and Joe Blanton.

lefties
Romero 3.66 ERA 4.16 FIP
Grace 3.58 ERA 3.62 FIP
Perez 3.91 ERA 3.32 FIP
Doolittle 4.10 ERA 3.00 FIP
righties
Albers 1.64 ERA 3.33 FIP
Madson 1.83 ERA 2.27 FIP
Blanton 7.31 ERA 6.47 FIP

really outside of Blanton- pretty good pen now. 3/7 guys weren't with the team a month ago. And Koda Glover could come back as well- giving them another righty(he's got a 5.12 ERA but a 2.68 FIP.)

Add to the 3 relievers added Howie Kendrick- nice month of July for the Nats. Really helped the team IMO.

Apparently the deal was made so close to the deadline that the paperwork didn't get in until after 1P/4E.

So Darvish, assuming he's ok (rumor is that his last disaster start was because the Marlins knew everything he was gonna throw), this is a monster acquisition. Even more so if Kershaw's injury is as minor as it's now sounding (he's already started throwing).

The other bullpen lefties don't offer much, and I really hate to say that about an Owl. But Cingrani's got a nasty 4 seamer, so I'm hoping a little tweaking from the staff and judicious use will make him more effective.

yup i like all the moves. Just wish they'd have done something about that third starter role, but have to hope the lineup can make up for that.

If Strasburg returns like he's supposed to, that's no issue.

Giants are now officially alone in the race for the top pick in the 2018 draft. What a proud moment. But in all seriousness it's probably the best thing for a franchise that has a dearth of top level talent in the minor leagues

It's an issue if you don't trust Gio

But at this point, why wouldn't you trust Gio? For the year, he's inducing more soft contact than he has in 6 years, and the hard contact is down by 3% as well from last year. His Line drive % is down from 22.9% to 18.4%. He's done what a lot of pitchers are doing- throwing far fewer fast balls- down from 64.4% to 57.2%.

He had 1 bad month- May. Even you like FIP-
April 3.84
June 3.31
July 3.32

he in fan graphs was the #11 pitcher in the NL in the month of July. After being the #7 pitcher in June. And #16 in April. For the whole season- only guys who will make the playoffs better than him in FG- Scherzer, Kershaw, Greinke, Strasburg. And like I said- that's in Fangraphs. in BR- he's #2 behind only Scherzer.

And I'll take how he's trending. Last 11 starts- he's got a 2.31 ERA. opponents only hitting .169 vs him.

RE: 2017 MLB Season Thread
the Giants are in for a long rebuilding period. They are old and expensive right now. looking at BR they have already with the contracts on the books and picking up Madbum's option and declining the options on Cain and Moore already up around 170 million dollars in payroll. Consider that the tax threshold for the '18 season is 197 million, and they're going to be right up against that.
